I was reading an article from NZ advertising a Suzuki "Farm Worker" they were new LWB and tray backs. The advert said they are for farm use only and can't be road registered. Does anyone know anything about this.

You can buy them new in NZ, they are marketed as a cheap alternative to side by sides . They can't be road registered because they don't meet new safety standards etc from memory.

They are imported Marauti's, do not meet the requirements to be registered as a new vehicle as no abs, airbags etc. Some people have managed to put them on farm rego as an atv(Weird NZTA crap)

YOU personally would have had to have lived in India and owned the vehicle for 12 mths, and have the paperwork to prove it, to be entitled to a 2nd hand personal import. It would be better to live in NZ for 12 mths I reckon. The vehicle doesn't need to have been regd O/S, but you do need to prove ownership for that time you were away.

there are bucket loads or silvias in oz but they were never sold in OZ.

They're eligible for compliance, and various parts like seatbelts have to be changed in order to make the car meet ADRs. It doesn't have to meet current ADRs, only ADRs appropriate for its age.

However a 2014 Maruti would have to meet 2014 ADRs and that's not going to happen.

The private import path might be pretty frought. Although you don't have to deal with ADR approval, it might be very difficult to get the car registered because it's not a car that's approved for road use in any developed country. Imagine buying a side by side in NZ and then trying to import and register it here because you owned it in NZ. It wasn't registerable in NZ so why would it be here?

The question was about privately importing it. To do that, it needs to have been personally owned by you.

If you're talking about commercial second hand imports (sometimes called Grey Imports), companies need to approved (as a Registered Automotive Workshop, or RAW) to do so, and the vehicles need type approval under the RAWs scheme. The list is limited and it's not open slather. See THE LIST. The only Suzuki/Maruti is the 660 Turbo Carry.

RAWs will arrange ADR compliance for the vehicle, as the "type" is pre-approved because it is already compliant or close to it, and will affix a Compliance plate that will then allow any subsequent owner to register the vehicle in any state.

A Private Import will not necessarily be ADR compliant, and will need to undergo a process similar to an Engineer's Certificate. It will not get a Compliance Plate, only a "Supporting Letter", and this may influence future purchasers decisions and influence it's market value.

You cannot import complete cars for the purpose of wrecking or dismantling for parts, but you can import non registrable vehicles for special purposes, ie earthmoving equipment, motorsport.
