I have a typical sloppy steering box. I have tried a number of second hand units with no improvment. I have replaced the front bearings, tie rods etc and now the weakest link is the steering box.

Can any one sugest where I may be able to buy a new one or have my one reconditioned at a resonable price, close to the Gold Coast would be good.

Or is power steering an option in a 84 1Lt?

some time ago the drama with rebuilding them was the shafts wore and couldnt be replaced, better steering shops can spray metal now to build them back up and machine back to new

Thanks Royce, I will drop them a line. Back in Charters it wasnt a worry but dealing with 3 lanes of Gold Coast traffic is a bit different!!

i got a new steering box from suzi sport for my 91 1.3L for $400 i think

there is a nut and screw on the top of the box loosen the nut then put the screw in a few turns then tighten the nut this should make it better be for i did it i could do half a turn before the wheels would move then done that and now it got a little bit of play hope it help i might try and get a pic if you need it

How tight should the screw be when you do that? Do you tighten until first contact, or do you keep tightening beyond that, if so how much more?

you need to screw it until its not noticeably loose or stiff when you turn the input, much easier to do in a vice with fresh oil

BUT for it to need adjusting something has worn which is where the play comes in anyway

Tighten till there is no play in steering. Easiest to do it with the front wheels off the ground. Once you have adjusted, spin steering from lock to lock and check for tight spots. If there are any, back off a little.

Sounds like Mad Kenny overtightened it, or maybe it was just a coincedence.

A truckie once said to me theres no point adjusting them cause they go sloppy cause bits wear, at the same time they wear the hardening off everything so when you adjust it it jsut loads up stuff that cant handle it anymore nad they fail

Not with Kenny, there wouldn't have been a spanner in sight. More like a cold chisel and a big farking hammer.

the adjusting screw justs 'tightens' the feel, does not remove slop. adjust the input shaft bearings, just like on a diif side bearing.

iv often wondered how much play they had from factory?
cause every sierra iv driven has had play there.
but it still moves the pitman arm ever so slightly.

For your info I got a quote back from Driveline Services, $440 to rebuild my steering box, would take 2 to 3 days.
