Hey Guys,

Thought i would introduce myself. Ben, 24, Craigieburn victoria. Im in the market for my first jimny. I wanted something just for myself and to take my young bloke up the bush.

Ive done abit of searching and ive come across a couple of jimnys that are 99/2002 models with a fair few kms on them. What sort of issues are going to arise with them being over the 200,000km mark? I only have a small budget once i sell our 2007 nissan tiida.

The plan is too lift what ever i get up a couple on inches, some bigger tyres and thats really about it. Mainly just want to tour around a bit and get me into my hunting spots.

Depends on use. I wouldn't expect miles of life left in the motor at that point. Depending on what the engine problem is, you can look at individual repair jobs (typically valve stem seals) or a complete replacement 1.6 motor from a baleno donor. This is very cost effective if you are able to carry out the conversion yourself. All the SOHC 16V motors I've seen with over 200K on then have had leaky stem seals leading to some light smoke on startup.

Death wobble is common and the fix for it, whilst well known (now) requires some skill and effort. I'd expect wobbles in an old car.

Check for driveline vibration. The car should drive almost as quietly as your Tiida. There should be no significant whine or vibration.

Other than that, the seats will likely be shot, avoid cars with obvious off road use, but really, what you should be willing to buy/pay depends on your ability to fix issues yourself. Personally, I'd look for a car that's cosmetically untidy - dark colours with peeling clear coat, light parking dings etc. This stuff brings the price RIGHT down on an otherwise good car.

Do a LOT of searching about lifts for Jimnys. It's easy to end up with a car that's too tall and too wobbly from what I can see. Also be aware that gearing will need to be addressed if you exceed a 215 75 R15 tyre (28") and this adds significantly to the cost of running tyres over this size.

Thanks for the info Steve. It's all just one big idea at the moment.

I have no issue with doing things myself. Kinda the whole reason I want a stock jimny so I can play around with it.

One build a really like is pete_79. His set is really something that I would be going for. Just basic to get me up in the hills driving around.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of good second hand jimny's for sale in Victoria. But I'll keep searching.

don't rule out a good car from interstate, if booked early flights can be had pretty cheap these days.

both of mine came from interstate & i'd have no hesitation doing it again.

I've been looking interstate as well. I have no issues of driving a car back.

One thing I forgot to ask is. Can I fit a car seat in the back? This is a must as my young bloke will be 2 in September. Gotta cart him around safely

so the answer is yes, but like many wagons/hatchbacks, the belts will extend across the load area, which is a pain.

for a more comfortable go slow bush rig, a auto with a bigger oil cooler may be worth a look.
will stop ya little tikes head flinging round when your bouncing round on the clutch in 1at Low.
i know my manual surprises both me and my dog on occasion.

I almost head butted the dash in the pathy we have. Forgot how pokie the autos can be in low. Gave it a quirt in reverse up a hill. Fun times.

I'll keep my eyes out for a jimny and see what comes up
