Hi guys,
I recently got a 2008 Jimny and the car starts fine and has a spare key. However the primary key has the alarm / remote entry fob and it's currently not working. The last owner said it stopped working and they replaced the battery but that didn't fix it or it would only work if you squeezed the thing a certain way etc...

I've been searching the internet to see what the procedure is to re-program the fob for remote entry.

I can only find information in the service manuals here:

For the transponder programming which requires a specialised Suzuki tool. However my car starts fine and the immobilizer isn't an issue, it's just the remote central locking I can't get working.

I'm going to try replacing the battery again, but from what I've read I can buy another remote access fob, but I'll still need to program it for my car.

Can anyone help? So far all the Googling I've done has thrown up results and procedures that don't work. The owners manual just says take it to the dealer but I know that dealers can charge a fortune for this sort of thing.

Any tips?

Mine stopped working a while back, after a while I thought I'd try a new battery, didn't work. Stripped it down to just the circuit board, cleaned contact points, cleaned the rubber button pads etc. still didn't work, put it all back together and gave up. A couple of weeks later I randomly gave it a try and it worked and has worked ever since.

Mine seems similar to yours, I just got another battery for it. Removed and replaced, I noticed the doors unlocked when putting the new battery in, but the buttons (lock / unluck) don't work. I tried to clean contact points (removed rubber boot) also but no joy. If I press the buttons directly (without the rubber boot) but no joy. So looks like the remote is still programmed but the buttons don't work.

I noticed you can get replacement FOBs on eBay etc.. for about $50 or so but I will still need to program it.

Any ideas as to the process?

I looked at those too, they said it comes with programming instructions but feedback seemed like it was a bit hit and miss. Mine came good just as I was about to order one so I didn't bother

usually when buttons stop its the solder joints holding the button to teh board crack, as batteries go flat and range get reduced, people seem to think pressing harder will help and crack them

i believe there is a trick to the programming where you open the drivers door and go from ACC to IGN 20 times or something, then turn to off, on and press the button... something like that...

Yeah that is basically the information I'm looking for, I've found a few threads around the Internet littered with this info but not sure if it works or which is the correct 1. Hence I was looking for this info in the owners manual + factory service manual but no joy yet.

Anyway I'll see what I can dig up. At least I know the receiver in the car is ok since it works when I put the battery in.

I'll ask see if Mr Minit or similar can do this also.

I went to the local key cutter a while back, he could cut the key but said new remote would have to be taken to a Suzuki dealer for programming. If you find definite info on how to program please make sure you share

I had a second key programmed by the dealer and it went something like this as described on the site linked by Alien.

From that site:
1) Confirm that the vehicle is the following conditions.
• All doors are closed.
• Ignition key is out of ignition switch.
• Driver side door is unlocked.
2) Disconnect negative (-) cable from battery.
3) After 30 seconds, perform the following procedure within 60
seconds.
a) Connect negative (-) cable to battery.
b) Operate driver side door knob switch from lock to unlock.
c) Push “LOCK” button on transmitter and confirm that are
operated from lock to unlock.
d) Push driver side door knob switch to lock position.
e) Push “LOCK” button on transmitter twice and confirm that
all doors are operated from unlock to lock. With this, code
registration is completed.

Yeah I tried that, but admittedly if the buttons on my remote are not working then that wouldn't do anything. So I'll give it a try if I get another replacement key.

Gotta be worth a shot, I noticed a green like colour on top of the buttons, could be the old silicone from the boot worn into the switches and caused poor contact.

A bit of a delay here. So when I replaced the battery I tried messing about with the remote and found that it works intermittently. I managed to capture it misbehaving on video.

I haven't tried to use anything to clean the contacts but will do that soon and report back.

Just as a follow up because it's starting to drive me nuts and I haven't found a solution yet. I just called a Suzuki Dealer who told me a replacement key, re-programmed and cut would be around $380. They said the key itself was around $200. The rest of cost is getting re-programmed (but that is for transponder)

However because the key still works (transponder disables immobiliser) it means we don't have to replace the entire key, just the fob part that controls the central locking. I was quoted $80 for the part + programming so from the sounds of it that would be about $120 or so...

They will need the car for a couple of hours.

I've seen replacement key shells on eBay with the buttons for about $80.

I'm going to do a bit more research into this to see if there is a way to reprogram the central locking part of the remote on my own. If not I'll cough up and pay Suzuki, but wanted to respond here since every time I search for this topic on Google I now find my own question and I figure some other poor soul is going to find it in future and not get a definitive response.
