Hi guys.

New owner, new board member.

Just brought a 93 Vitara for a daily drive and a bit of weekend fun (plus to cart all my Dive gear around.)

Has 280 000 on the clock. How good are the gearboxes and how long are they likely to last? I am rebuilding the engine - Well, my HD mechanic brother is, and I am wondering if I should consider replacing the gearbox now, or run it for a few more years. First is sometimes quite stiff to get into, but the clutch is being rebuilt as it's definitely on its way out.

Anyway, I'm bound to be back with newbie questions about the rebuild!

Thanks in advance

They seem to be pretty durable. They're also easy to find second hand, so unless there is a specific problem if just run it.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention its a manual box.

Good to hear they are pretty durable though. I thought they were, but nice to hear.

there are 2 types. 1 is stronger than the other, both will be fine behind a 1.6.

"first is sometimes quite stiff" and "clutch" kind of gave it away for me.

No idea on the year but guessing from the second gen vitara. Here the wreckers have 100's of boxes stacked like jenga.

Would make sense if they upgraded the box with the extra power of the bigger motor. All that power...
