bump for interest.

Especially Sierra resprays. best way to spray front clip, cab etc.

wash.
strip bits you don't want painted.
good scrub with kitchen scourers.
blow down with air.
tape up.
three coats of Protec.

its fast , easy , long wearing and less than $100.

Rust guard from bunnings. Sprayed the Sierra fine with it. There is also a Green SWB on here that used it.

what like filling the rust holes with bread instead of newspaper when bogging as the mice will eat the bread out quicker & damp newspaper will only make it rust worse.

Depends how good of a job you want really. and how long you want it to last...

You can get away with spraying enamel paint and so long as you sand it to some degree and clean with wax and greese remover you will get an alright job. just practice on something other than your car first. I remember dad spraying my mums car back in the day. Came out good. It is shine off the gun.

Acrylic paint is more durable and better for darker colours (i painted a car in acrylic as well as some speaker boxes for home), goes on easy enough, but you have to sand it and buff it back to get a shiny finish once the paint has dried. Nothing hard about that, just tedious.

2-pack is the best, but its nasty stuff from a safety point of view, and a bit more exy i think (ive never used it). Beauty is its shine off the gun, so no sanding/buffing.

Best bet is to find a good shop that sells car paint and have a chat to them. and/or google it. plenty of info out there...no different spraying a sierra compared to spraying a commodore.

for a 4wd though, id be going as cheap as you can get as its going to get scratched up anyway, so perhaps some of the above options might be better.

final word, applying paint is relatively easy, once you get the hang of how much air and thinners you need and figure out your distance it goes on easy. what i find damn near impossible is fixing dents to look perfect, certainly a skill in that. for reference when i did my car, i spent 6 full days sanding and preping the car for paint (removing trim, sanding fixing dents etc), and 3hrs applying paint.

I was just looking at marine paint, comes in a range of colours and reasonably priced, much harder wearing than automotive paint, allready has high gloss in it and can be rolled on or sprayed on. Great if do alot of beach driving.

Everytime i repsrayed i would sand back to bare mettal spray on several coats of etching primer sand with fine sand paper then fine primer and light fine sand and then 3 coats of Paint then 1 coat of clear then 1 coat of light paint then 2 coats of clear (mainly did this as metalic). And make sure they dry properly before recoats if using automotive paint as if dont when come to cut and polish it will all just come off, takes a few weeks to fully harden after last clear coat.

I use fiberglass filler for holes with rust converter bout 20bucks from supercheap and then sand from rough 150 to verry fine 340.

If dont care about colour to much i would look at the marine paint its chemicaly hardend and self high gloss so dont need to worry about all the extra hard work. Wont scratch easily and most likely will be easier to repair if fussy about scratch's etc being a 4x4 i dont think its worth spending heaps on automotive paint cost a few hundred dollars.

There is also Plasti Dip but pretty expensive but its just spray on if dont like it rip off. Also NEED alot of coats would almost be around 800 to paint a sierra.

I resprayed a whole car with instructions from a profesional car restorer, with automotive paint its all about preperation and taking your time, def not a rush job if want a nice finish, and dust is a B*$*

no necessary as paper doesnt rust

seriously, its probably your best bet, I used to work in a paint shop and the "how do I paint my car?" Line got old real quick. But as others have said its 90% prep and as long as you can apply the paint reasonably well you will be right. Light colours hide more defects than dark colours so keep that in mind.
