Have a little problem with my 95 LWB vitara w/ G16b that I need to sort out.
Once the car is warm, it develops a missfire and loss of power. Usually happens after about 15-20 mins of driving and is more pronounced when doing highway driving.
The loss of power is pretty massive, being so that I cannot accelerate up hills in any gear faster then about 70-80km/h, where before with a run up I could do 110.
The missfire / bunny hop is usually under light throttle conditions however occasionally will missfire under load.
My research has led me to believe that it was a faulty ignition module overheating, so I replaced that and It got a little bit better but still has the symptoms.
I am now led to believe that the ignition coil itself may be overheating / of old age and not providing a good enough voltage.
Sometimes the loss of power / missfire is so severe, that It will missfire, I will release the accelerator, then press it again and their will be up to 5 SECONDS of lag before power resumes (any power whatsoever) with the pedal down.
The reason why I am led to believe it is the ignition problem is due to these symptoms do not occur when the car is cold, only hot, so at the moment I have ruled out the MAF or TPS.
Anyone have any input or some help on this?
Cheers

Mine does similar things. (G16B) She does the surge/miss/hop thing and I tend to only get 80 (struggles to stay on 80 in 5th if it'd windy) out of her going up the gateway bridge. I haven't noticed a pattern or figured out any rhyme or reason.
I'm having diagnostics and compression testing on tuesday. Will hopefully pick something up.

Let us know what happens. It runs fine when cold and used to run fine on the highway, could do 120km/h on flat pretty easily with my 235 muddies. Just want to sort this out as its getting a bit irritating and dangerous on the highway!

Replaced the ignition coil today aswell, and still no change. So far the module and coil have been changed. I know that the previous owner replaced the rotor head, leads and plugs as well.
Because my model of G16B does not have a Crank Angle sensor (95 model) I am led to believe this has to be the camshaft position sensor inside the distributor. Looks like I may be up for a new dizzy and they seem to be around $350 which is VERY ANNOYING. Might try and find a second hand one or borrow one to test.

Mine is the 2000 model and has a couple of coil packs. (So no distributer) If they're having similar issues it may have to do with what the engines DO have in common.
You symptoms sound a fair bit more hair rasing than what mine are. Mine just freezes up for a second and then continues on normal operation as if it never happened. I'll SOMETIMES get a loss of power in second gear. But she will run perfect for a few weeks then suddenly decide to be a cow for a day or so. Then play nice again.

I have a similar issue and it has me stumped. I'll be pulling the engine out shortly so I'll give everything a good clean before it's installed again. Good luck finding your gremlin

Mine is heat effected. The car always runs fine when cold started, but as soon as it heats up after a bit of driving the condition worstens. It seems to worst especially if you turn the car off and restart the car whilst hot.
With a replaced ignition module, ignition coil it only leaves the dizzy to be replaced. The dizzy in the 95 and under model has the Cam Angle Sensor in it which I have read is also effected by heat.
The 96 and over models have a crank angle sensor at the front of the sump which can also cause issues like this but mine doesnt have it so it really only leaves the cam sensor.
As far as I am aware the MAF is not going to be effected by heat, nor is the TPS so I will try my luck with a dizzy.
If anyone has a spare dizzy that is proven tow ork they want to lend / sell me let me know. Im located in Newcastle!

Now that you say that, mine had a terrible bout of constant surging when I got back on the motorway after stopping half way between byron and brisbane one night. I never usually stop.
Hopefully my diagnostics will tell me tomorrow.

Does this model G16 have O2 sensors? (I assume so) - perhaps the heat is affecting those and sending false readings back?

I'm not entirely sure I've only had the Suzie 7 months. I should study her mechanics manual.

Dropped Suzie off at her doctor, He's had an idea a that he wants to try instead of the diagnostics test. He wants to try cleaning/changing the throttle body/position sensor.

Picked the Suzie up... He cleaned her sensor... Compression test came back at 175-185. (fairly pleased with that) Told me that the lovely metallic rattle she developed a week and a half ago is my catalytic converter She hesitated/hiccuped as I drove away. X.x So rule that sensor out. Bennis, check out a few of the replies in this thread. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=48060

Yup, He said too. Though, most things from the ignition to the exhaust could be a possible cause of surging and hesitation. I started at the cheapest thing, Sparks and leads, and I'm working my way up the list. Coils don't look top notch either. depending on quotes, I'll replace the exhaust too. Give it 12 months ans she'll be 80% all brand new parts.

Smash the guts out of the cat to see if it fixes the problem.

I'll need her to pass a NSW Roadworthy test in around 12 months. Isn't it required to have a working Cat Converter?

Yes but it's a quick $0 test to see if it's causing the issue. It's buggered anyway

Fixing it will also fix the issue. Mine isn't playing up as bad as Bennis's engine is. I wouldn't have the faintest idea on how to remove it to clear it out. She'll be booked in for fixing as soon as I grab a couple of quotes.

I pulled my cat off as I suspected it was blocked and choking the motor once heated up (as cats only work when hot).
Mine was not collapsed at all but was as little bit blocked, but i decided against knocking the guts out of it as it ran exactly the same with the exhaust dropped and no cat at all... A blocked cat would be a consistest loss of power once hot anyway where as mine is intermittent and has bad misfires.
If you have a blocked cat and knock the guts out ull loose power and torque especially unless you put a pipe through the cat body.
Just trying to hunt down a dizzy atm. If i cant find a used one within the week I suppose ill buy a new one. Bloody suzukis lol

Might give them a ring tomorrow. A new dizzy on ebay is $285 but am trying to find a cheaper option first.

Fuel Pump? I would be changing the fuel filter first because it is cheap. If it is going lean it will hiccup and be down on power.

Already been over the fuel filter! As for the wires, I am not quite sure as the car isnt with me at the moment. It is the dizzy that does not have an inbuilt coil, the coil and module are seperate. Looks like this one http://www.nationwideautoparts.com.au/p ... IS-094.jpg
