Hi everyone,
I have an SJ70 which has a high idle issue, even when warm. My dad thinks its something to do with the auto choke but I am not sure.
What are the things I should be looking for?
I adjusted the throttle stop screw and that made the car idle much better but apparently its revving up around 1500rpm again warm.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers.

You have two screws to adjust, we will start with the cold idle screw.
Location: rear of carby where trottle arm is. When to adjust: cold engine only.
The cold idle screw can only be adjusted with the engine off, so firstly with a cold engine start it up and note rpm, if it needs adjusting turn engine off and make the adjustments, start engine and note rpm, adjust if needed as before.
Next is the hot idle screw
Location: engine side of carby. (Note its not the lower mixture screw with the tamper proof head) When to adjust: hot engine after choke has come off.
With a hot running engine adjust screw to desired idle. Thats it.
I think you have the two screws mixed up or you didnt know about the hot idle screw.
So with a cold idle adjusted to rev a bit higher with the choke on, as the engine warms and the choke comes off the hot idle takes over.
These settings can be totally wrong if the accelerator cable is too tight on the carby end.

Thanks for your replies. I will do some checking and follow your posts and see what happens. Your right, I was clueless that there were two screws to adjust so thanks for that.
How can I check that the auto choke is working as it should?
Is it a matter of looking into the carby at the choke butterfly and watching it warm up from cold to warm?
Cheers.

Yes remove the inlet pipe off the top and see if it opens from cold.

Don't want to hijack here, but I too have high idle (2000rpm) and if I set it any lower, which I can but not much more. The car dies when I brake semi hard or come to a stop. Checked all vacuume lines and they are all replaced and in the right places. So I'm pretty stuck, heard it could be the timing, but I haven't fiddled with it at all.
Thanks Thomas

^ air bubble in the coolant which has stopped in the auto-choke - so its not getting warm coolant passing through and hence is stuck shut?

If the idle is changing when you touch the brake, I'd be looking at the vacuum lines again.
bye
