Hey guys,

A mate of mine has informed me he has found 2 x 5.12 geared diff centres.
They are front and rear I'm told,

Now because I'm a noob, I have no idea if they will fit?
He said it has Sierra carriers on it, but he said it should fit vitara

Please help! Been looking for these diffs for ages and finally found them.

5.12 is vit ratio

if they are installed into sierra carriers they wont fit.
if they have sierra centres, you may have issues inserting the axles.
If either of these two are correct, the 5.12 ring and pinion is only for a vit front diff.
A vit rear diff is bigger.

I dont know how you could be looking for ages, the 5.12 are generally unwanted and get recycled at you pull it/pick a part wreckers.
Even at $75 each almost no one wants them and they get melted down.

The front and rear Sierra diffs are same size.
Vitaras have a larger rear diff.
Sierra carrier won't accept drivers side cv/axle in the front, but does bolt in.
So I would guess you can't use them, but depends what they actually are.

Ok so these diff ring an pinion are no use for me as they can only be installed the front.

And because its a RWD, on the highway in 2H it would make no difference?

Huh? Are you suggesting you put 5.12's in the front only and keep your existing ratio in the rear?

Without sounding patronising.... that's not going to work.

No I was not, I was just confirming that it would not work that way.

Cheers,

Well, yeah. And to answer your question:

With 5.12's in the front only, in 2H it would make no difference. In 4H it would make a LOT of difference. 8O

Yes henno I know this. I was just asking to double check my theory.

But more importantly, im assuming only a vitara rear diff pinion and ring will fit onto another vitara.

Ok, so a different 5.12 geared ring and pinion say out of a sierra would fit in a vitara?

Yes.
the 5.12 would have come from a vit and would fit in a vit front.
Buy it would require vit carrier and centre.

Most Vit/x90 rear diff carriers are the same (able to accept the ball joint for the top triangle link)
however some are 10 and 12 bolt centres.

gv ring and pinions will fit, but you cant use the rear carrier, as gvs run 4 links and dont have the casting to accept the upper triangle link.
Some gv diffs have larger diam ring gears and have material removed from the diff housing to allow the larger gear to slide into the opening at housing-carrier interface.

some xl7 stuff front and rear may fit. Others will not.

Some of the 12 bolt diffs have load bolts, others do not.

Im sure there's more complicating factors ive forgotten.

clear as mud?

I have found a 2000 1.6L GV rear diff, how do I tell if it is the right model?
And will it bolt straight onto my SV420?

I read some threads in the "Good Tech" section, and the 2000 1.6 GV has the 5.12's
I think this also happens to be the Steel Diff!

He wont sell only the centre but only the whole lot. Also he wants $1,100 for it.
I thought that price was insane! Or is it on par?

Cheers for the help fellas.

Unless someone else added the steel diff, it will be alloy.
A steelie is sought after. $500 (proper wreckers will try to bleed you for more)
If setup with 5.12 (imo worth less, you dont know who did the set up).

Unless proper bricks and mortar wrecker (I wouldnt pay very much) at $1100, hes trying to see if you will touch your toes
