Hi guys,

I recently purchased a 4 door 1.6 vitara (1995) and was wanting to do some upgrades at some point, but as we all know the research comes first and then the fun bits Whats the best gearbox swap ideas for a vitara? They rev really high with their low gearing and i would like a box with some decent highway gears so i dont use so much fuel at 3k doing 100km/h. Any ideas?

So far ive been told the T50's and the T40's. From memory i think the T50 is a ford box (dont take me on that) and the T40 was a toyota box out of a hilux. Other than that, i have also been told the gearbox out of a 22R hilux would fit, but im effy. If worst comes to worst i will save my penny's and get a whole set of custom ratio gears CNC'd for a standard vitara box and just work around with some calculations to get the best rev ranges. However this will be expensive as f&%k and would like to avoid it if i can.

Oh and any engine swap ideas wouldn't be a bad thing either

I personally wouldn't want a Vitara with taller gearing than stock. Anyhow the gearbox ratios won't be too much different than most other boxes. If you want to change final gearing swap the diff gears. You'd be able to swap your 5.12 gears for a taller ratio easily but it's gonna be rubbish on the highway.

it will be sitting in it's sweet spot in 5th on the open road, pretty sure suzuki engineers selected the tyre size, gear ratio's & diff gears for a reason... dropping the RPM is going to bring the suck.

Seems like a fruitless exercise, with extra wtf sauce.
Toyota/ford gear boxes/custom gears is pretty far from the mark.

If the cruising rpm is too high for you, or economy is too high, just get a different car that satisfies your desires.

Lower revs is just going to increase engine load, and rather than save fule you just going to burn a hole lot more when it's windy, hilly, or ladend with cargo. Sure on flat ground with a tale wind you save fule, but how often is that.
But as stated , bigger wheels or higher diff gears is going to be the only viable option.
You could install a hiclone with you hilux gear box and then your car might actually make fule as you drive .

Ok so if i fit bigger tyres it will bring the revs down a little bit? Its just my old sierra used to do about 3200rpm at 100km/h and i got no more than 300km out of a tank on 235/75/r15's.

I have no problems fitting a long range tank but fuel economy was crappy for me before. However my sierra was a carby engine, and i am looking to buy an EFI vitara.

Another question then, whats the best performance upgrades for the G16B engine, the obvious ones to me are exhaust, snorkel for cleaner and more air, and maybe a stage 1 'towing' cam for a better tourqe range, but anything else? Oh and engine swap ideas we most welcome

Actually, I'm a bit confused on that point because in your first post you say "I recently purchased a 4 door 1.6 vitara (1995)", but now the story goes "..and I am looking to buy an EFI vitara." You don't need extra wtf sauce, you already have bottles of the stuff.

Irrespective of what gearbox you eventually manage to install, just about all 5 speed boxes will have a 5th gear ratio between 0.75 to 0.8, so your revs in 5th are not going to change a significant amount.

I'm close to buying one i have found, i'm just wanting to make my final decision based on what i can do with it. I love my zuk's but i just dont know if going back to a sierra, going to a jimny, or doing up a vitara is my better choice. i like the vitara's more than anything, my old man had one and i really liked it and would love to have one myself.

If your sierra was in good health i doubt you only got 300km to a tank and a tank varies for everyone only way to properly calculate fuel usage is

Reset the trip meter after filling up and drive how you normally would and when you fill up divide the litres put in the tank by the km driven and dont forget to compensate for the bigger tyres so 10% or whatever its for a 235/75/15

Installing a j20 will probably be cheapest power upgrade.

Fuel usage will mostly be aerodynamics and weight, so dont add too much shit to it. Non stock spec will make it worse (larger tyres, agressive tyres, flares, bullbar, roof racks, roll out awning, swing away carrier etc).

You can maybe hunt for a modern more efficient engine, but aspects of the car you cant change will be the limiting factors.

Simply based on your km/tank reasoning.
If you want more km per tank, fit a bigger tank - im sure thats not what you meant, but see why the km/tank is of little use as it provides very little information.
