Before you think it this is not going to be another what's the best cheapest simplest, bolt in fully sic commodore conversion I can put in my coily thread.
Its more of a what would you fit if you could thread, Im looking at all options for the LJ ute build. I have the J20 in it at the moment and have been considering a bit more poke for speed events. As such ive looked at an H27 but the challenges getting one are annoying me. Im even considering an LS1 but the weight size and stupid amount of power actually is putting me off due to the amount of money needed to spend to make the rest of the car strong enough.
The car will be around the 1100-1200 KGs and as such im looking for 120+kw,
Requirements are, All alloy, no cast iron boat anckors no matter how powerfully they are. Automatic rear wheel drive gearbox option no buick heaps of crap.
at this stage money is not really a concern as im just pipe dreaming.

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/hrd ... ederated=1/end thread (I was looking at these at SEMA after reading up about them on line and in Hot Rod. They are da bidness) More seriously, is the BEAMS 3sge alloy block? Plenty of power and revs stock, inline 4 for packaging, Toyota gearbox options. They were an altezza motor so should be easy on import. Just an idea that's not too crazy.

I reckon you should stay the course and wait for an appropriately priced H27a to show up. It's not like your project hasn't been sitting there for an age anyway; what's a few more months. Or just drive to S.A. and steal Atari's. That said, selfishly I'd like to see you do some tinkering with the J20... so I can steal ideas

What about a 1uz-fe? Alloy, available everywhere, only issues will be the same as the LS series though: too much torque and breaking things (about ~100Nm more than the H27a)

believe me I have considered the 1uz. not quite as powerful as the LS, but actualy bigger in dimensions to fit one.
cheap ish too.

Why not commodore? Series II 3800 is only 10kg heavier than the LY7 ecotecs.
And on that note, why not one of the LY7's? Parts and engines everywhere you can imagine for a little as a slab of beer. Suzuki even use this engine under the code N36A in their current XL7's.
Would that be suitable?

Would that be suitable? um, because its huge, heavy, underpowered, and comes from a commodore. nuff said

If it were me, SR20. It is ally, about the same displacement as Zook engines. and they also actually make grunt. 5ierra wrote: And on that note, why not one of the LY7's? Would that be suitable? Chuck in the DI one and see how it goes. You would not have a problem with it being under powered.

this ^ ive always wondered how this would work, good to great power over a large huge rev range and light weight.

I would expect a rotor to be way too peaky for crawling

Rotaries, they produce no torque

haha im not saying anything about the torque they do or don't produce.
im saying peaky, pick up extremely fast, not gradually.
ive driven tuned up rotors and they have a powerband similar to a two stroke

I didn't think rotaries were that light. I also don't think 120kw requires a turbo rotary. A 6 port EFI series 4 motor made 117kw from memory and has a very linear power delivery with no noticeable power peaks.
Not judging either way, just pointing out my experience.

Whats the difference in torque figures between the two?
4agze had the option of a larger pulley for more boost, an sc14 for more go or a turbo even more fun.

210 vs 180Nm
bugger all in it.
I don't really wanna spend time and money building an engine beyond stock, but it I have to ill just build the one I already have in the car.

sr20vet would be my pick. 309nm at 3200 rpm in stock form, with a little boost that figure will jump up. They have very small cams that have vvl so the tq comes in very early and progressive. 206kw in stock form will be plenty for what you want.
Otherwise just a typical sr20det (or even de + T for the higher comp and low down off boost power). Alloy block, great torque, progressive power in stock form. Huge aftermarket support, very strong block could be lighter if it was open deck, but good to have a closed deck block in a 4x4.
The vq30det is also a good option, they are not much heavier than the sr20det due to the half open deck. Great torque and great power. You will need to re-route all the turbo gear from the back of the engine, but better than most option listed here. Making it fit with a turbo will be a little difficult but I think its possible. I like the straight 4 from a fitment point of view when you have turbos attached
