hi i have just installed 4.9:1 transfer gears in my sierra t case and am at the point of shimming.
i have followed the instructions on low range and how they say how to do it in the shimming instructions. the process in the shimms page is different to the process on the destructions for the reduction rebuild. when i put the front housing and rear housings together there is no play in the input and output shafts as the bearings sit tightly in the housings. and fitting them together with no gasket as it says on the shimms page leaves no gap between housings. it says you need between 0.36mm and 0.45mm gap between housings for both input and output shafts. can you stack more than one shimm on each of the bearing seats? and do they just sit on the rear housing or do you have to shim from the mid housing aswell?
any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

im not going to tell you it doesn't matter.

Just that I just run mine without the paper gasket.
no shims, I have had 4.9s 4.1s 6.5s, 5 different cases and never had any fail

Yea you can stack shims to get the correct clearance

Most of the cases ive re-built never needed the factory shims changed , even with aftermarket gears .
but we did have one with 5.1 Calmini gears and that was noisy as hell until we shimmed it properly

I've rebuilt a case with 4.9s and more recently a stock case without using shims in either. I'd always thought the gear whine was just part and parcel of the 4.9 gears. Since doing the stock case I realise it's probably because I didn't shim them as it has gear whine now whereas it didn't pre-build. I just ordered shims to redo the 4.9 case. You can get both input side and output side shims but I don't see a reason why they can't all be stacked on one side (without going crazy with your stack of course).

Before the needle rollers on the countershaft decided to die and take out the whole gear train my shimmed 4.9 set was dead quiet.

No idea. I ordered mine through Lowrange with a new set of gears. Maybe try Suzisport and the dealership. Try doing a search on here. I have a feeling someone mentioned the dealerships sell them relatively cheap (for a dealer).
