Hi, My rear diff accidentally got drowned so I put brand new bearings and seals in. Now, when the car reaches around 80km/h there is like a howling noise. When I step on the accelerator it slightly disappears. When I let off the accelerator it is conpletely gone. Anyone have any suggestions on what it could be and what I can do? I dont want to be pulling the diff out again.
I put the bearings and seal in and I had another guy (who is a diff specialist) set the preload and gear meshing. I'll try tighten the pinion nut a little and see what happens
Don't mess around with it, take it back to the "diff specialist" - I'm no expert, but, based on your description of the problem I would say there's too much clearance and it's not the pinion preload that needs to be adjusted - there's also a high probability the gears are either not meshed where they originally were or are damaged (and possibly both).
