Hi everybody,
Sorry if this has been covered before, I ran a search but couldn't find what I was looking for...
Just purchased an 06 swb GV (1.6) as a run around, and wanted to get some thoughts on options for increasing the power output slightly. I have previously owned a modified swb 92 Jx Vitara, and thought I could cope with going back into a 1.6lt daily driver easily. What I didn't Factor in was the drivetrain loss on account of the 06 being a constant 4x4, and I'm guessing the fact my previous Vitara had a modified exhaust/extractor system. It just seems very underpowered compared to my previous vehicle.
I wanted to see what viable options (cost wise) were out there, if any, to increase the 1.6s output? I will be using the car for mostly town driving, once a week highway use, and occasionally to tow a JetSki (total trailered weight 500kgs).
One expensive option I was toying with was to transplant the M16 for a J24, although after looking on here I realise that's probably wishful thinking, due to availability and the J24 being a bit of a turd anyway.
I have no probs with the way it runs around town, but just don't want it working so hard on the highway.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated
Glen

The only sensible option is to sell your car and replace it with a J24 engined version.
Any other option that adds meaningful power will cost more than upgrading to the J24 engined car, and will likely devalue your existing car by the same amount.
Of course you could fit extractors and a sports exhaust, fit a less efficient air filter, (no, that's not a misprint, I do mean a filter that filters less efficiently, like a K&N) or various other small modifications that may make a tiny difference to performance. You could also reduce the weight of your car a small amount, which might make a similarly tiny difference, but from the sound of what you're asking, you're really chasing 15-20% torque increase at the same revs. That's not possible without significantly increasing the volumetric efficiency of your engine (at those revs) Forced induction is really the only way of making an engine behave like it's 20% bigger. Thats not cost effective.

Dropping weight is the cheapest & easiest option... If you don't use the back seats there's a fair saving just in removing those. Then, if it's only daily driven on roads etc, look to save weight at the rims & tyres too (alloys and road tyres will be lighter than steel rims and muddies).

I'd agree Alien, but the quickest ways to drop significant weight are normally not palatable. Other than pulling the spare tyre and rear seats, most of the ways to lower weight are pretty intrusive or impractical.
Macketts, I'd be surprised if the apparent lost power over your old car is due to driveline loss - I'd suggest it's due to added weight. An NGV will be quite a bit heavier than a 1992 Vitara.

Completely.
All trim. Sound proofing. Power windows and locks. Replace seats with much lighter seats, remove air bags/ABS.... it's not hard to make a car light, but it's hard to make a lightened car legal.

Thanks guys,
Appreciate the input... Sounds like what I'm looking for is wishful thinking! Might try pulling out the back seats and see if I notice the difference.
Just to confirm though, would the J24 actually fit in these earlier models if you could get one for a steal one day? Or were the vehicles redesigned later on in the model range to accomdate the larger engine?
Thanks again,
Glen

Assuming it's a new shape one you can bolt an M18a in. Not a big difference but probably a bigger difference than the usual exhaust, filter ect mods.
