I sheared my second set in a year or so...

I have heard of people using the 60 series dowl type also people using a 12.5 grade Allen key head bolt with the stock cone washer....

Any people using other things?

What are you going to break if the hub bolts don't fail?

I break these things all the time (OK about 5 or 6 times in the last 2ish years). I actually carry a spare set all the time now. I'm confident they break because they work loose (I typically find them loose after every trip or 2). I'm confident they work loose because the old cone washers a pretty much useless.

So i've recently ordered some new cone washers and am going to put new bolts in too; go from there.

I'd agree with that. I'd still be concerned though that upgrading to dowels, 10mm bolts or maybe even Gr 12.9 unbrakos at peak torque will move the weak link somewhere you can't fix it on the trail.

Imo its the best spot to break.
I have about 10 sets of spares, which i have acquired through pillaging wrecks when i get a chance.

I would like to get my full floater to fail at the same spot.

If I knew someone with an EDM machine lying around doing nothing I'd have some sets of hub bolts EDM'ed with a hex up the centre so when they break you can just wind them out with an allen key.

That would be awesome gwagen! The first time they sheared off I managed to get them all ou on the trails and put spares in! This time I only managed to get 3 out... By the top of the first hill the hub was just hanging in with only 1 bolt...

Not sure on the weak point but dank ran the dowels and never had a drama and jonnoracing is running the 12.5s and never had a drama....

Also I think your right with the coming loose thing too... After sheared mine off we checked the ones on faves sierra and they were only finger tight!!!

Ya think I just get some new stock bolts and tighten them after wheeling?

Your call on the stock bolts (I'm putting some flash zinc plated ones on mine :p ). Before mine started coming loose I used to drive mostly open diffed; with very savage left foot braking for traction, I ripped 3 front crown wheels (6.5" 5.12 ratio) to bits and the stock bolts were fine with that sort of shock loading (I think I only killed one set around that time). I theorise all my used cone washers since then have been too old/lacking in elasticity (most axles I've wrecked were from 1L's because I used to collect a lot of CV's!).

I put the 60 series studs on my Vitara, which I got from ebay.
When mine snapped I was unable to fix track side, did rest of trip in 3wd.
Snapped off level and were seized in.
I fitted them using anti seize now.

Really? That's news to me - I was unaware that Dank dowelled his hubs - I'll check, I'm pretty sure I have his hubs (and I definitely have his 60 series studs) in my shed and I haven't seen any dowels.

He certainly blew hub bolts when he wheeled with us.

I'm leaning towards 12.5 bolts with new cone washers and see how it goes.... I have a few spare hubs if that turns out to be the weakest link... Bit of trial and error I guess

The weakest link won't be the freewheeling hub. It will be upstream.

Stock Sierra hub bolts. I agree they fail when they come loose and I've trashed a couple of sets. I'm happy to break them occasionally.

Sure they do. Plenty of gr7 8mm bolts on a Sierra though. 60 series stud kits are cheap and I'm sure they're comparable for strength too.

I bought the 60 studs just for the cone washers, but decided to throw them on to try.
The nuts were a 13 mm spanner which is a bit of a pain for manoeuvring room.

What size tyre are they starting to break?
I've never broken one. But I've seen Jimnys pop them like skittles on 30's. They have hub spacers though..

Never broke any in 15 years on my Sierra, with varying tyre sizes up to 32.
My Vit broke one side, on 30's, towing in the sand.
Was same side that my auto locker played up on,
so the constant banging with the drive coming on and off, may have contributed,
but possibly contributed to them coming loose as well.

I'm running 34s.... Both times have been drivers side....
