So a idea to get the ute happier on big angles, looking at a bike carbi. 250cc Chinese carb can be bought very cheap, and a small adaptor will see it on. Potential issues would come from running to lean, setting up throttle cable, and they have a vent out as well? The inlet is the same size as the stock carb. Any ideas or thoughts on this? Could be setup for about $30-$50, a worth while investment, could also keep a spare one in glove box for that kind of $$

The way you have worded your original post suggests that you are thinking of using one carb (apologies if I'm wrong) It also looks like an older round slide carb. If I recall correctly (I wanted to do bike carbs at one point) People use carbs to suit around 600cc bikes (edit: this was G13s!). Most bike carb setups use one carb for each cylinder and thats how I'd run it. If I were you, I'd buy a wrecked sports bike of a name brand for as cheap as possible (make sure its an inline four) strip and rebuild the good quality Mikuni or Keihin carbs, and part the rest to make back some money. Hope your project goes well.

I found the 1ltr sidedraught carby great on angles much better than the 1.3 carb. U can get them brand new on ebay for $120ish

Nope single carb. I have bought one. Quad carbs are a head fuck from talking to people who have set them up. Maby I expect to much but on big leans buy previously it has sucked for me. Time will tell.. I might try run similar jet size as the stock f10a carb?

1 carb will be fine on a four cylinder four stroke as only one cylinder will be drawing on the carb at any time. Let us know how it works out. I have been thinking of running an SU carb on my LJ80.

Ive rolled with a 1ltr carb doing alot of crawling and found tgem great but all have been maruti with under 100xxx on the clock. Perhaps just try a new one first its only $120. Lots of people have a go at rebuilding carbs themself and fail miserably

The mg410 carb has some vacuum gear on it that id like to avoid. The carb I have bought is off the bigger Chinese bikes. The issue with su carbs is there all old, expensive and well used. I will let you know how I go. There is plenty "how to tune" sights online.

Yeah, thats why I left it in the "that sounds kinda cool" category. I thought you may have been wanting to do the typical "better on angles more power and looks + sounds cool" setup like everyone else. Like me . Bike carbs are good on angles from my experience crashing bikes. So long as you aren't upside down or on your side you'll be fine. If it were me I'd use a jet similar size to what you have to start with.

So.. this carbi arrived quite a while ago and i had put it in the to hard basket.. last night a mate pulled the carbi down and had a look at it.. these carbi's are SO simple.. so today we made it work the adapter was fairly easy to set up, some tapered bolts and i had to turn some bolts into studs and weld them to the other side.. then we fitted it up, and decided to see what would happen.. and it started! straight off the bat, ran smooth and idled.. we then made up a throttle cable, and well it wouldn't rev.. some tinkering and we pulled the fuel jet out (it only has one fuel jet and one for idle.) and ran a 1.5mm drill bit though it... we then had it running and had to adjust the needle to about the middle... and wow.. it has a good 10% more power, perfect throttle response!! the carbi works completely different than the stock one, it also has a deeper bowl and the jets are much further down into the fuel! so it should realistically run on a bigger angle! don't mind the ugly adapter i still need to fix up the hose to the air box and make up a more perminiant cable cover. But yes it does work! and works well!

For what it's worth, an SU (HS4 is good but HS6 and HS8 will go on too) will bolt onto an F10a manifold with some filing. They're good on angles and are very simple/tuneable. They're also actually larger than the standard carby. Pics or GTFO denby.

Acid is for cleaning your insides, detox is for pussys Well I have been playing a little with the ute, new throttle cable, a touch longer than stock, that allowed it to fit with no kink or need for a bend in it!! The stock choke cable fitted up like it was made for it and the stock intake hose was 5mm to big, so I made up a little sleave from a pit bike air cleaner and a dot of super glue holds it inside the stock hose before the hose clamp does its thing. Issue I have atm is these carbi's rely on the vacuum in them, its what sets the tune basically, however the snorkel was adding a fair bit of resistance. So that will need a upgrade of some kind! I will grab another ebay carbi before my bucks just in case.

The HIF38 is the chosen SU for the F10a in the UK, a brilliant little carb and they seem to cope better at angles that the HS series carbs. You can get full rebuild kits for them and even buy them new, they are such simple carbs to rebuild it's often not hard to revive them. http://sucarb.co.uk/Sounds like the single bike carb is working well!

All carbies rely on vaccum to function. Some are more finicky than others. So yea if it runs well without the snorkel then you know you have a large restriction somewhere.

For all I know something may even be in the pipe! I will build a new snorkel when my life settles down. I also bought a full overhaul lit from ebay $16 delivered. So a spare set of seals and a float etc. I will order a genuine mikuni at some stage there under $100 delivered.

Got a link to the actual carb you have? I've been playing around with quite a few bike/outboard carbs over the past year

This is great,
These are the easiest carbys to play with. for $27 you cant go wrong
good luck getting it jetted/running right, for what its worth the needle position makes a huge difference
if it runs well without the snorkel fitted try running the needle on a leaner setting

ATM the needle is full down. May need a smaller jet! I bought a full rebuild kit for it though so that comes with a new jet. Have now done a good 150km moving furniture and stud Its been great! I'm a huge fan of this setup. Then new found power is nice to. Something we noticed, it has a much stronger idle, it will now dry steer the 35s at idle without stalling. This wasn't possible in the past!

Grab an elcheapo mini drill/jet drill set off ebay and then play with the size of your main jet

Running a touch rich. I bought another set of jets and a different taper of needle. Well different number (bigger) may get a 1.25mm drill bit.

So.. This carbi works amazing! The car will make power on nearly every angle.. I had a flop and I actually had to switch the car off as it was ideling completely on its side! There was a small amount of fuel come from the breather, just enough to smell but I couldn't see it. Best carbi I have ever driven off road. Hands down.

Hows it on the road? Say highway driving
Sounds great. Where did you route the overflow/Breather line too?

In what way exactly? Its the same as the stock carbi, except better in every way. My only complaint would be the first tiny bit of the throttle is slightly touchy due to a slightly heavy stock return spring on the slide in the carby.
