Picked up my new motor on the weekend.
Firstly im going to replace the timing chain, it doesn't have any noise but has done 160k so figure if I do it now I should never have to do it again in the life of the engine.

question is, do I need to buy the full kit with all the replacement gears? or just get the new chain and tensioners.

4wd products on ebay has the full kit for about $250 but the gearless kits around are shit loads cheaper.

secondly. the intake pipe on these is flattened as it runs under the surge tank pipe on the front of the intake, whats to stop me making up a new curved surge tank pipe in order to bigginate the intake

I know you like to get your fab on, but depending on the specifics of your bonnet clearance could you not just send a bigger intake over the top and not even bother too much with the rest? It'd make a fair bit of a hump, but I have no idea how much clearance your truck is going to have in the end.

yeah that's a possibility aswell. either way it seems to me to be an unnessessary restriction.

If it was me, I'd be leaving the timing chains alone and be very thankful it's working well.

The engine also looks nice and clean down near the harmonic balancer - so no oil leaks around that area. If you did do it, replacing the chain tensioner and water pump might be a good idea?

PS: Wouldn't you want to work out if there's a actual reduction in cross sectional area (where the intake is flattened) before looking at modding it?

I don't think that's a photo of the actual engine he has.

nope not the actual engine. the one I have has leaking gaskets both sides where some one didn't put gaskets back in but used silicont when they had the tappet covers off so ill need to have it apart to fix that.

ill probably pull waterpump and every thing else off I can to replace it. so I know its 100 % and I wont have to pull it again for a long time

I was thinking the same thing.
I would say it allows the same volume of air through the flattened part as the round pieces on either side of it.

But it would most certainly disturb the air flow, if you're into those hyclone type theories on air flow.


I would also be looking into the function of the surge tank pipe, is the bottom of the connecting pipe a specific height in relation to the top of the pieces on either side for any reason?
