Hi all,

Do the G13A engines have a well known history of chewing up starter motors? this is my third starter in 2 years and im worried its something serious. I'm buying good quality replacements from Repco and even a mechanic i talked to is confused..

Is it just something these engines are know for, or does anyone else have a similar problem? Or is it just my engine.. If so what could be causing it?

Every starter motor I have replaced has usually been full of mud and dust.
I usually get the original start reconditioned by an auto elec and get quite a few years out of them.
Starters, alternators and wheel bearings get killed often, off road.

Have you inspected the flywheel to see the condition of the ring gear?

Nah not yet, would that be something that could cause the starter itself to malfunction tho? Wouldnt that just wear the gears down on the starter and the flywheel? Last time it was the solenoid, this time its the motor itself.. I've got a new one coming but i would like to know why it keeps spitting them out like this..

Sounds like poor quality refurbs - if you had a string of the same failures I could understand your question, but when the failed part keeps changing...

I don't have a Sierra but the OE starter on my G13 has run for 18 years odd with no more than a failed solenoid.

Yes it would but in your first post you don't specify what is wearing out.

Sounds like bad luck.
