I did another oil flush....suprise suprise noise stopped when the flush was added.


Added the new 15-40w oil and the noise returns for about 10 seconds and then goes.

Well the car made a liar out of me. Started it this morning and no noise.
About 15 seconds later the noise returned faintly and after a 10 minute drive the noise was still there.

Grrrr! Maybe if i do an oil change daily ill be able to live with it?

Ok guys, another thing I've noticed.

Since the last oil flush and fresh oil the noise is definately quieter and gets a bit louder and faster with revs....then disappears at 2000rpm.

If I let it sit over night, the noise isn't present on start up but after 10-20 seconds the noise returns.
Then wont disappear till it gets a "good" running.

This is doing my head in haha I don't want to pull it down if I don't need too

Are you still running the Repco oil filter?

15W40 oil will be fairly thick from a cold start too (compared to the recommended 5W30.)

I only put 15-40 in as it was cheap. I plan on doing another flush in 1000kms just.
Yeah still got the repco filter in. Its just weird how when it was fresh, it went away after start up but a day later its return for good

I just rang around for a genuine filter and they want $43.

Try different dealers mate, that is ridiculous. Even if its just to find somewhere in town that has them at that price, then call your closest one back up to tell them they are shit and to price match.

I paid $15 last time I grabbed some here in WA.

So apprently suzuki in queensland is a different entity to the rest of aus and therefore are much dearer. (According to one rep down south)

So i ordered 2 oil filters from sydney at $14 each and $10 shipping....better then $43 each haha

So another thing I've noticed is the noise is more like a rattle now (like a ball bearing in a can left ontop of the motor) and gets louder on deceleration.
Still disappears at 2000rpm.

I might swap the oil to 5-30w oil with a original filter and hope for the best

I think I'd be pulling the cover dude, mine started making similar noises and I found that the chain had come loose enough to break one of the guides and a piece of it was bouncing around on the chain.
All it needed was a new tensioner number 1 and guide, bought a kit of ebay for ~$100 and it's been 3yrs and everything is still good.
The H25 is an interference engine so if the chain gets loose enough the valves can hit the piston heads which is pretty much as bad as it sounds, so It's probably good to get it done.
Its pretty easy if you follow the guide http://www.suzuki-forums.com/1g-1999-20 ... hains.html (theres probably one here too) and have the factory service manual on a Tablet.
I'd never pulled an engine apart when I did mine and had it done in a day, just make sure you get the bottom bolts on the timing cover back where they came from as they are slightly shorter, found that out the hard way.

Cheers for the reply. Looks like Ill have to pull it down, i just wanted to narrow the noise down before I did so I knew what needed to be done (lifters or tensioners)
Ill start ordering some parts I suppose and get the missus to let me buy torque wrench.

you'll know what it is as soon as you get the cover off, normally tensioner #1's teeth will be broken off the ratchet (well that was the case with mine) allowing slack in the chain and broken guides are pretty easy to spot.
As stated in my case i just replaced it, the broken guide and the number 1 guide as there was some wear on it.
There was little wear on the sprockets and the cam chains, guides and tensioners 2&3 were all fine,
Pretty much if anything other than #1 tensioner and accessible guides need replacing then the intake manifold and valve covers need to come off in which case I would replace everything.
Also before you pull number 1 tensioner off make sure you put some wire in the chain to keep it in position (pic), This is the most important part and if the chain does jump any teeth or you loose the position the whole thing needs to be redone.

I replaced the ryco filter with a genuine Suzuki oil filter and it has made zero difference.

Guessing its time for a tear down...

Also, maybe pure coincidence but when the car is upto operating temp, it seems every second start up the noise disappears within 2 seconds....every other start up the noise hangs around for 2 minutes plus.

Maybe i might just buy a timing chain kit and lifter set.....hope to god its one of those two things
