So I just munched the rear diff between my heavy right foot, muddies and locker. Im looking to upgrade the ring pinion (its a 98 manual) so I assume it has 4.09 though I will confirm this soon enough. Are there any after market upgrades to replace these with that are stronger? I've looked around and have not found any options to replace these in a jimny, some for Sierra's but with higher ratio's... To be honest id rather end up around 3.7-3.9. The sr20 has no trouble driving the wheels however obviously if I change the rear I need to be able to purchase some new front gears to suit aswell? Is anyone aware of after market suppliers for these items?

There's no obvious upgrade I'm afraid. There are no taller ratios available for the Jimny front end - 4.09 and 4.3 are it.

For the rear, you could try and find a GV rear at 4.1 or (4.3 and then gear the front to 4.3 to match) and have a custom housing made to put the GV rear third into the Jimny.

First of all, let me preface this by saying thankyou for your response I have always considered your posts to be very accurate and relevant even if not always well received when I read the forums for information.

A quick search makes that option seem unlikely and not worth the effort involved.

I think I'll find a Hilux diff and chuck that in the back it seems like a G29 2/3/4/5 is 4.1 ratio and a A/B 03 abc are also 4.1 ratio (I'd think that would be close enough to 4.09 (difference of roughly 4mm per rotation of the 31" wheel) to not cause a problem and since 99% of my thrashing is rwd and I am normally being more sensible when climbing things it shouldn't be a massive issue. I am curious what you think about this option? if you are aware of any road blocks I might encounter.

I think you would need a bundera rear diff, and the 4.1 ratio.
Bundera rear diff is offset similar to sierra/jimny.
I think there is one kicking around AZ for sale section, with redrilled flanges etc to fit the 5 stud pattern.

4.1 vs 4.09 is the same as slightly different sizes tyres.
When 4x4 is used (low traction), it wont be problematic at all.

ooo, that's pretty helpful thanks jdk. pity its in Brisbane, probably going to cost me way more in freight then it will to just pickup my own Bundera diff and centre when I am in Perth in a few months.

bugger it messaged him anyway, would be a pretty good start. Saves me cleaning all the old brackets up and getting the axles drilled. Hopefully he's happy to freight it :S
