Jimny runs le old whining noise out in the sand today. no sound noticeable in 2wd.
Spent the arvo in 4L in 2nd or 3rd/D being auto. was a constant whine so thought id do some googling and look in workshop manual. it would seem I could be in for a good time.
having 60oookm, my guess is mechanics never touched the TC, so it could at least be low on fluid.
My question is, if there is noise, should I dump the oil, planning to replace it and if I find crap in it, pull the case apart to find the problem? Or if clean, refill and check for noise?
As it is the misses daily, I would need to source replacement parts before pulling it to pieces. Was a good day out though

Good idea to change all gear oils every year or so.
A small whine while in low range is normal. A mettalic sludge on the drain bung magnet is also normal as long as there are no larger metal pieces as well.
If unsure of oil to use lookup Castrol's data tech online.

Could it be the fact the transfer case oil has been circulating around the case for 5 years picking up metal and moisture regardless if 4x4 has been used?

If you have significant noise changing the oil won't make a meaningful difference. It can't unwear worn parts. However, whine in low range is completely normal.
