Okay so the SWB vit I purchased recently a couple of weeks ago started losing power intermittantly (as if the tank was too low). I replaced the fuel filter which was quite old.

Tonight in leaving the car park at work - once I got onto the road - seriously lost power. Almost stranded me completely in 3 intersections as I found somewhere to get off the road in the traffic.


So parked it and waited for NRMA.

I was thinking rubbish in the fuel tank. Reason being is that I did run out of fuel the day before (its quite a drive from Batlow to the nearest fuel stop early in the morning - Gundagai - and I got within 10km. Yes it is my fault, among other things still not used to the sudden rapid drop of the fuel gauge when it gets to 1/4 due to a ding in the tank... On the plus side a friendly copper stopped and gave me a lift to Gundagai and back After i drove to the petrol station and filled it the rest of the way up it started losing power again for about 5 seconds, then it was okay until tonight. Given the timing I was thinking I may have stirred up some rubbish in the tank.


By the time NRMA arrived the car had cooled down and the problem seemed to have vanished. Started the car and he unplugged the AFM and the engine kept running. He said that should have stalled it so I have a problem with the AFM.

Makes sense to me. He followed me home and it was fine all the way.

When I got home I did the unplug AFM test again and now every time I did it the car died each time.


So any thoughts before I order a new AFM from repco? At any case it does seem unreliable.

No. The engine will continue to run with the AFM disconnected.

My guess is a faulty/intermittent fuel pump, possibly related to running out of fuel.

Actually I DID kill the engine three times in a row as stated once it started running almost okay again so I don't think that is right. Thanks for the help though Steve.

Engine does run with it unplugged from switch on of course. Apparently the ECU runs in open loop mode in this case.

Anyway I do think it is the source of the problems. What I did not mentioned as I forgot, was that while the engine we running really badly it blew a LOT of smoke and fuel was dripping a lot out of the exhaust and smelt of fuel. When this glitch is not happenning it runs nice and clean.

What type of AFM do you have? does the Check Engine Light come on?

Yes it did sometimes. I replaced it and problem came back next time I drove it, however.

Car has been with an autoelectrics place all day where it has performed flawlessly while being driven around, and sitting idling for most of the day.

I really hate intermittant faults! As does the sparky. He still has the car - here is hoping it does tomorrow.

Prior to it dying as soon as the car got to mid temp, it would be fine for a week or so.

Anyway not expecting to drive home this weekend. The latest I can delay going home though is next weekend (more than 21 days away buggers up my travel allowance claims)

Pick up car tomorrow. Still no problems...

On plus side guy is only charging me for an hour of labour.

He pulled off cleaned and redid the connection to the water temp sensor since that is a likely culprit. He also redid my battery terminals as they were a bit frayed (was planninv to do this already soon)

So here is hoping intermittent over fuel probs were from that quarter. Only way to know is drive it for another month and see if it comes back.

Now i just need to change the rad hoses before they chanve from a leak into a torrent.

crank angle sensor can cause it to go into limp mode.
could be a bad batch of fuel?

Surely in limp mode the check light would b on all the time? Ie if ecu swaps to limp mode it shoyld tell you.

I think there is a good chance a bad earth was involved as a lot of wire to the battery was broken.

If the crank angle sensor goes bad the engine will stop.
