I just picked up my 2006 NGV today and I have noticed a noise I didn't recognise when I test drove it a week ago. When I am traveling above 90 kph and let off the power I get a reasonably high pitched whirling noise. When it gets back below 90 it seems to go away.

The car has a statutory warnanty from the dealer but I would like to know first of all if I have a problem and if I do what it could be so when I walk in there I can try hit them with any known issues or an educated guess on what it is. I have all the gear to change fluids in the transfer case diffs and auto but not sure if I should do this before taking it to the dealer to have it assessed.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

It's extremely unlikely the dealer will take any action based on a noise alone. I'm also not sure I'd want a dealer to carry out a repair under statutory warranty. They will have the work done as cheaply as possible.

You need to get a professional opinion as to the source of the noise.

Do NOT change any fluids or do anything at all to rectify the problem if you want the dealer to do work under warranty.

Ok cool I will start discussions with them tomorrow. any guess on what the mystery noise could be ?

No. It's basically impossible to say anything meaningful or helpful about noises on a forum.

Yep I figured that would be the case ? Another point worth making is it still makes,the noise coasting in neutral

The "off power" suggests a differential backlash related issue (which could also translate into a bearing issue, if that issue allows excessive backlash) although in my experience, that will be present regardless of speed.

So I took it to the dealer today but got the mechenic to look at it before I spoke to the sales guy I purcheased from. We went for good drive and I showed him the noise and what conditions it shows up under. He thinks it's drivetrain related not sure what exactly.

The dealer has accepted that they need to repair it. There attitude so far has been great and helpful no problems so far.
