I am looking at putting 31s on my 99 Jimny, just wondering what the best option would be for reduction gears.

I have done a lot of research (maybe not enough) but people are always tossing between a trial jimny plug and play reduction set or get the Tbox from an sj and buy reduction gears for them

Hoping to hear about how you did it, roughly how much it set you back, what the strongest and longest lasting option would be

Cheers

Unfortunately he has the planetary gears in the '99 Jimny Mike. The gears in that thread won't fit in his case.

The options for those early model Jimnys are pretty much as he says.

The 2 Jimny gearing threads on here have all the info with gearing comparison charts and everything.
On my phone now, so can't link the threads, but they're not that hard to find.

I went the sierra transfer option - I wasn't too impressed when I found out the jimny's are a chain drive - so the sierra case was a no brainer.

all up price wise - cost close to $1k if not a bit over (4.9 gears and full rebuild kit for the case + sierra tfer to jimny adapter + beer for the mate that had the correct shafts) but the AU dollar to USD was a lot better when I bought my reduction gears. the hardest thing was to find the correct prop shafts and doner sj transfer case. also my doner case had some pretty decent damage done to the main output shaft - so its got a fair bit of slop in it. - but apart from that, I firmly believe the transfer case will well outlast the car irrespective of any modifications I plan to ever to do it.

the only thing that annoyed me with the sierra options is the reduction gears chop also reduce the high range aswell - but 31's with 4.9's would probably work really well.
