Gday,
This question is Landcruiser related, not Suzuki but some of you mechanics might have some suggestions.
My daughters boyfriend has a Landcruiser HJ75 which the front CV joint has completely collapsed on ( and obviously kept driving). The axle has torn the axle seal apart and made a real mess of the seat where the axle seal sits and cant get the new seal in.
Im thinking of using a die grinder to remove the bur and build up the worn area with DEVCON, hone or grind it back to shape and put a bit of silicone gasket on the face before pressing the seal back in.
Has anyone tried this before and is DEVCON plastic steel the best product to try or does someone know of a better product to try.
It might just get him back on the road until he saves some more money and sources a new diff housing or some machining.

Cheers

I love devcon, I onced fixed a crank case with it, ggo enough to get it home after a days driving.
But in this case no, it doesn't have the durability to handle constant wear like that and will wind up breaking, probably at the worst possible time.

I have used it twice both on boats. Once to rebuild the bottom 2 inches of an outboard leg I left in a bit of reef at 30 knots and that lasted forever. The other I broke the tiller handle on my 15 HP. I drilled and pinned it and used Devcon as the adhesive on the cast alloy. After about 5 hours use I hit the wake of another bigger boat and the impact of the landing broker it again.

So after my little set of stories I would only use it in what I'd call a passive situation where it will never be load bearing.

If you decide to give Ita go let us know how it works out.

I've used Devcon as a filler on a tank but its not very strong on its own.

If what you're doing is applying a thin layer to build up an area where a rubber seal seats, so that the seal can fit snugly, I'd be inclined to give it a shot - it's not a high load situation - you may not even need it, a thin layer of RTV sealant on the outside of the seal will usually retain it and seal it.

I use Devcon products extensively over the years, mostly to repair broken plastic parts (again not high load situations) - lots of door handle repairs, frequently with heavy copper wire to provide support - I've built up "non-load bearing" trim parts, with layer upon layer of plastic steel and then filed & sanded to shape before painting.

It is a 75 series so bits are laying around everywhere and are worthless. If it is a early hj or fj 75 then doubly so. I would just replace the bits and be done with it.

The few times I have banged up the seat due to running on a busted cv its only ever been the outer edge that was stuffed so was only a matter of filing it down using a half round file and it has sealed up again without any dramas.
