Hi Riley
Thanks for the quick response. Haven't really considered a ute. I'll pm you.

i think for $3000 your going to struggle to find a good one. you should be able to find one but i can almost guarantee that you'll need a new soft top and the body will be rusty. the rust is relatively easy to fix the soft top is a custom jobby

Paul, I'm also in W.A. Remotely decent LJs are very very rare on the west coast, especially soft tops. Because things rust so badly here we have no middle ground between $100-$1000 rusted out shitboxes and $10k mint restod ones. 99% of unrestored LJs over here will need the body off to fix the front body mount rust (not as big a job as it sounds, but still a bit daunting). The remaining 1% are beat to shit station cars. Over east they have a lot more of those middle ground cars like you're after, they're still rare and most have had dodgy resprays ect. FWIW if you do find something you like, jump on it. We're going through a particularly good time for LJ sales. We've had 3 neat restod rigs for sale this year, the last time one of those came up was 3-4 years ago. Point is, don't wait for a better one. Anyway, here's a neat Niva in your budget. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/mandurah ... 1095325670

A women out here on the opal fields had a Lada - It was like a boat I had with a Riptide outboard - Don't go far cos you always had to row back.

Hi All
Thank you so much for all the replies and the friendly atmosphere. I think I need to save some more money before I venture out. But you have all made me very welcome and more determined to get an LJ just so I can be part of 'auszookers'.
Having read through the Forums I am amazed at the input and technical knowledge you all have and the way you help each other out is a commendable.

IMO just be patient - the right one will come up eventually.
If you want to get a bit of a human horn, search the forum for LJ build by the user Hooki...

You can spend an awful lot of time & money trying to turn a rough car into a nice car - and still not have a really nice car. Wait & buy a car someone else has done the work to - those 2 on gumtree over your way represent good value - the LJ20 especially (if you want one as a restored, original curio). Still, if you don't want to end up with a nice car, buy a cheapy & get handy with a welder to fix the body rust. Mechanically robust & simple to work on, but around 35-40 years of flogged out to contend with. Good luck, Michael
