Just want to see what people are experiencing. I know there is plenty of variables here.
Lets say, what most people would expect out of there tank with 31 tyres and a winch bar. i know tacho reading are off with gearing etc.
how many ks does a full tank of fuel get you?

Polly and Ugly Bob Polly has strange size tyres, rather than standard by 10% circumference give or take. No gearing. Ugly Bob has 31's, used to have a 1ltr transfer case but I've swapped that for a 1.3 case a while back. For these figures to be accurate you'd have to make adjustments for the odo under reading. Large spikes are usually because I've been working on the car, UB got a large amount of fuel dumped from the tank thus it looks like a large increase in fuel. Makes it roughly 340km/tank for Polly and 270 for UB

Gas Cubby... I've used it for years. Plug in however many cars you want to keep track of, change it all from imperial to metric calcs. Every time you fill up you plug in the cost/ltr, odo and total litres, it makes all the calcs for you. You can keep track of the servicing and repair costs, helps you identify what has made the fuel consumption go up or down (btw, any fuel saver device you wish to consider using? I've never found one that works).. A couple of the more interesting stats it gives you

I used to get around 300ks from a tank, usually putting in about 34-ish litres each time. Some fill ups it was better (times when I didn't go near the highway) sometimes is was much worse (highway speeds and trailer attached)
30s, 6.5's, running A/C flat out.

When I had 31s on a Sierra I could get 600km to a tank. 85L long ranger!
Normal consumption on 31s would be 11-12L/100km.

300 ks does reasonable marko. I would never run 98 in the sierra, 91 is the best she ever got. haha
qthefun did you find a noticeable difference?

qthefun did you find a noticeable difference? I tried 98 in a knock sensed car. I found it gave better economy by a small amount, but did not offset the considerable extra cost per litre.

In my 1.8 jimny I constantly get approx 430kms to a 40 litre tank and mines all stock except for the engine. I tried running 91ron and it was always pinging so I'm now running 98ron and the pinging is completely gone however I wish I could run 91 as it's much cheaper, shit happens

qthefun did you find a noticeable difference? In my opinion 98 gives a better pick up and economy but long term is where it saves you due to the motor running cleaner and more than likely if you don't thrash it, it should last longer

So many misconceptions about 98 octane.
98 octane burns slower, liberates more heat when burnt but is harder to light. Therefore an engine on 98 can tolerate more ignition advance, but, unless timing is manually adjusted or the engine is knock sensed and programmed to investigate the octane of the fuel its being fed, then 98 is a waste of money and won't liberate more power.
Stock carby Sierras do not benefit from 98, neither do g16b's. They don't know what fuel they're being being fed so the extra burn time is wasted.
I have always found it cheaper to run a knock sensed motor on 98, so long as the fuel contains no ethanol.
Is it "cleaner" - I have no idea what that means. It may contain some added detergents to prevent gum buildup. It certainly comes from the same stock and is produced from the same refined product (naphtha) there is no difference in a refinery between 91,98, and 95 octane. It's all ulp at the refinery. Octane is blended for downstream as part of blending.
98 has a shorter shelf life, significantly shorter than 91.
I work at an oil refinery.
Steve.

Hey Steve, is the old wives tale that 91 and 95 are essentially the same octane true?

greenzook89 wrote: Hey Steve, is the old wives tale that 91 and 95 are essentially the same octane true? Not quite, but close. Steve posted about this elsewhere and was pretty much bang on. Let me see if I can find it. Found it: Gwagensteve wrote: 95 and 98 are the same product. There are only two grades of fuel blended- ULP and PULP. (91 and 98) 95 could be 98 octane, but it won't be less that 95 it could be off spec 98, it could be 98. Afaik, 95 will "clean your fuel system" just as well as 98. (I don't even know what that means but I bet the marketing departments of the fuel retailers do.) I think you will find that in a lot of cases the e10 could/can also be the same stuff that is in the 91 tank, because it can contain up to 10% ethanol anyway. Source: I also used to work in an oil refinery, although before the days when e10 became a thing.

just to chuck a spanner in steve - my sierra (g16b for all intents) pings on 91 in summer under heavy load (low rpm foot down), but won't ping on 98 under any circumstances.
Explain.

Explain. Is it 100% stock and unopened? If not maybe its been machined down and running a higher comp ratio deliberately or inadvertantly, maybe look at the timing. If not maybe you got an expensive to run g16b. :S

The ignition timing would be my guess also - here (in Guyana) we only get one grade of fuel, super unleaded, and it has become the custom to advance the timing to get best performance, depending on the engine, they'll take from 5~15 more advance than the FSM calls for, before pinging becomes an issue - the end result is usually a more "lively" vehicle, better throttle response, and maybe a few more miles out of a tank.

As Steve as mentioned and other people; unless your running a knock sensed car (ie; boosted, high performance etc) there is no need to run anything more then 91 (stay away from e10). The whole "cleans your car as you drive" would be pretty dismal IMO. It's nothing that a quick squirt of fuel cleaner additive couldn't do (and cheaper too!)
1; Stick to the cheap 91 stuff 2; spend extra money on mods 3; ??? 4; Profit

Explain. Ever checked your base timing? Might be out. Also, you might be running slightly warm or slightly lean. A combination of these could result in what you describe. My 660 was very sensitive to fuel and timing. My g16B couldn't care what I put in it. Even fuel so stale it wouldn't run a lawnmower.

On a side note; I get around 340km to a tank (running 30's so not sure how far out it is) and it takes about 30-35l to fill completely.

Beats me as to why. I just run 95 or better and it never happens.

It was kind of a fluke with my speedo drive dying and using a different one. There are some more details on my build thread. Its within 1 or 2ks at 100.
