The 2 seater maruti has become necessary to become a 4 seater for the fam.
problem is its only liscensed as a 2 seater and doesnt have all the holes for rear seats. Can i copy the stock 4 seater lwb mounts and have it changed and inspected at dpi.
Also need to know legalities of mounting baby seat in the rear ?
I will be putting a basic 4 point for added saftey

If the car CAME with it, you can have it... but if there's no provision for back seats from factory they won't approve the mod.

ie: My sierra is registered now as a 2-seater because i took the back seats out and it went over the pits like that. Because i have all the mountings and holes and it came with 4 seats originally, i can easily put the back seats back in, then pay $20 for a mod ticket (no inspection required) to go back to 4 seats.

I have however successfully argued that a sierra can have half doors legally, because the drover came with half doors from factory (no top frame / glass). The only solution to argue that with the seats would be to weld in the floor from a 4-seater though. Then you can point and say "look, it's all there and factory".

Now, all that aside... I personally wouldn't put a kid under the age of about 5 in a sierra. And even then i'd be scared of the results in a crash. We have a mazda3 for getting the family around. The sierra is just my toy and 2 days a week drives me to work (when i'm not riding in).

I'd give http://www.modified.com.au/ a call. See if they can assist.

Couple years back, a mate used them to add a couple seats to a rear of a Kombi, which went over the pits following a restoration.

Yeah i think most pre 90's cars were unsafe in the event of a crash
saftey isnt really a big concern with a kid in the back as long as your a sensible driver and the cars in good order. A pissy driver having a head on is gunna have same result in a new mazda as a sierra. At least i get to have some input regards to saftey, think of all the incorrectly installed seats getting around.

I think i will initially just copy the lwb 4 seater layout and present a factory 4 seater lwb as well when i get mine looked at and claim the holes ect... exost from factory like that

You do realise that isn't true, yes?

Dunno my missus and bub drive a patrol for the most part, probably has a much worse saftey rating than the mazda as well but i know what id rather have them in that. Bubs in the zook is going to be less than 1% of the time and mostly offroad going slow

I'll chime in here regarding the safety of cars.. I'm afraid to say that the average modern car, be it a bubble car or family sedan, is always going to fair up exponentially better in the event of an equivalent accident (or I should say the occupants will fair up better, the car doesn't but that's why the occupants do).

I attended a head on between a wee bubble car and an old Dodge ute (I've seen many accidents but this one springs to mind). The bubble car turned to dust with a few bits of twisted shrapnel laying around and the occupants were all walking around, more or less uninjured wondering WTF had happened. The Dodge had some front end damage for sure, but it became apparent that the main 'crumple zone' of that particular model happened to be the occupants knees.

The other flip side to this argument is that people have what's known as 'risk homeostasis'. This basically refers to taking extra risk where a perceived increased level of safety exists. Let's apply this here, average joe buys a car with all the safety features and drives faster, turns corners quicker, pulls out into traffic with less gaps and generally takes a greater risk than he would have with his very old and 'unsafe' car. Why? He perceives that he is safer in this car and in turn still maintains a similar level of risk, often increased.

Having said all this, I whole heartedly agree with the idea of putting the Fam in the Sierra Mr Rocky!! Not for the thought of maiming or killing them, but because life is meant to be lived and not cotton wool packed. You can do all the 'right' things and live in absolute fear of anything dangerous and one day you might still be all crap out of luck and cop it anyway. That's life, your kids will love your old mobile, let them experience it. Don't take this to mean you should put your kids in direct and foolhardy peril, understand risks and mitigate them where possible, avoid excessive risk.

I frequently enter this discussion when I hear things like 'motorbikes are dangerous' and 'don't go in the water because sharks are dangerous'. Is swimming at the beach or diving more dangerous than driving a 5star safety rated car to the shops? No.

I get asked why I ride motorcycles because surely I've seen people killed on motorbikes. Yes I have, but I've also seen people killed in cars but I also drive one of them. Get your seats approved and post pics of your family having a phat time :)

Then we will start a 'all the crazy crap we did as a kid that no one will let kids do now' thread

Yeah the aim is build the tubework around keeping the rear occupants safe in event or a roll or similar, i will be using the same cold drawn seamless as ive used for the other barwork. The challenge is going to be keeping it all under the radar in w.a. worst case scenario if its undoable legally i just do it anyway to the highest standard i can and remove for the pits if needed.
I think the experiences gained from taking my missus and bub off the blacktop in the zook outweigh the cotton wool argument.
If i brought a car based soley on saftey i may as well give up surfing, football and working in construction haha.

100% agreed - i can't wait until i can take my daughter out for a bash in the sierra, but she's going to have to sit in the front seat, so she's going to be a lot older!

hahaha i'll dig holes in my back yard if i have to.

Have you seen what they're doing to Tamala Park? That whole bush area will be reduced to about 10% of the size in the north western corner, and only the first 50m of beach will be untouched along the coast.

Considering that whole area was conservation area 10 years ago, it's pretty alarming the rate it's been sold off!!

Agreed. My Kids, my friends kids, my friends, everyone loves getting a ride in my crappy old Zook. I just drive accordingly.
I have fitted provisions for 4 point harnesses when kids are in the back and often ask the kids to do the spotting or take a pic if the going gets questionable.
Several local 5yo are "going to be zooki drivers when they grow up" :D

with tongue firmly in cheek........

wotcha want seats for?
chuck the offspring in the trailer Armsup,

As a scout - our troops ["3rd Balga Salvation Army Scout Group" had two troops at the time] used to go bush on the back of an 8 tonner truck, 8)
Unfortunately - the ruddy spoilsport sooky Mums had a dummy spit and made the driver put the gates on the tray.

With hindsight, just as well I suppose - with around 50 Scouts and all the tents and gear on the tray it was a bit crowded

Ok after touching base with suzistore seems they have been through it before as some swbs are only complied as 2 seaters. Apparently w.a. transport wont allow a change to a 4 seater if only 2 seats is on compliance plate. I will more than likely go ahead with it in stock configuration but have the rear seats removed for the 99% of the time they are not needed

I wonder what the fine would be?

NSW lets you add seating capacity. Seems W.A is a different country as usual.
