Hi there, My first visit and glad to be here. I hope someone will help me out. I have a 1996 SJ80 coily and I cannot select 2H or 4L. If I place it in the N position to car drives and the bottom transfer shaft doesn't rotate. If I pull the lever towards the seat the green 4wd light comes on and the bottom shaft engages. It seems to drive okay when in the N position. I have read forums where its suggested the transfer lever may be bent (which it isn't) or elevating the front left to try to shift. I contacted suzi store springwood and they have never heard of such a problem. Any feedback would be appreciated.

When people encounrer problems with a SJ80 transfer case, they usually install a case from a SJ70 as parts are more common. Having said that the Coily transfer uses a rod to shift between high and low range, its possible this rod could be bent resulting in issues.

Also when you are talking shafts. Front shaft (goes from transfer to front diff) rear shaft (transfer to rear diff) Jackshaft (gearbox to transfer)

Okay, thank-you for your response. Much appreciate your time.... There are two shafts, the one above leads from the engine directly to the transfer and then onto the rear drive, the lower shaft returns from the transfer to the front diff.... Either of these drives can be achieved using the transfer to change from N to 4H ... I cannot engage 2L or 2H..... I understand that something may be bent, such as lever using excessive force to engage yet I can see no evidence of misalignment. A very good friend passed away and left me the 4wd. He Was a scientist and so I believe he took exceptional care of the little car. There is a set of books for SJ413 in the glove box but the plate on engine bay indicates it is a SJ80...Just learning

It is possible if it has been driven on tarmac you have some windup in the case. Drive back and forth in a straight line and see if it helps.

Ok, thanks.... my wife often asks me to drive back and forth to try and fix her cranky problem but It doesn't seem to solve her transfer issues. I am sure for the 4wd that there may be a different issue at play here.. Cheers. Mike

Unlock the front hubs and report back...

Also there is no 2L as standard in that transfer case.

If u have 4 jack stands jack up the entire car so all the wheels are off the ground and put the gear box i neutral and try it again . It might be wound up as suggested above. It might be a transfer stick bush as well

Okay I will try that, The transfer in not a top mount where the bush inside has perished the action is on the front of the box where the lever sits into a little cup underneath the lever action into the box. Thanks for your suggestion, Regards. mike

Okay, little frustrated here...... lifted zook so all wheels off the ground, very carefully got in and started to manipulate gears wheels and everything. Sorry to say that the star ship zookandroidenterprise is still not shifting from /going into 2H...... The engine was running and my daughter asked me did I get a plane or a dud.........

I've got a replacement SJ80 transfer case for $50 if you're interested.

I see your profile says you are in Brisbane, I'm north side based and could have a look. I reckon something is askew here and you don't actually have a transfer case problem.

Thanks.. I am at my wits end as I seem to be getting good advise regarding the problem which does not resolve the problem. I live southside near Algester. I am happy to drive northside yet I am concerned that I may be doing damage to the engine/transfer/gearbox by driving it so far. I don't know how to securely give you my phone number or get yours. Just something else... There is an industrial estate a few kilometres away. I went there when it was quiet and reversed around the streets until I had done about 3 kilometres. Police pulled me over, laughed and went their way............ Sometimes I wonder was that a left handed screwdriver moment? it didn't work
