Pulled down a gearbox that had lost drive in all gears bar 1st and reverse. It has broken the main shaft. Is this a common thing with these gearboxes? If I look for another busted gearbox to rob parts from am I going to find the same thing?

Not mine Shep but the owner was an experienced 4wder. When it happened he was on the highway in 2wd with minimal strain on anything

Probably not but using parts from a busted gearbox I would not recommend. Chunks of metal floating about a gearbox would likely have damaged other bits. I would look for a good replacement box.
