Hi all.

I recently bought a brand new 2015 jimny and it currently has under 1000klms on the clock. So far I have put on some 205/70 r15 mud terrains on a 15x6 pos 3 offset sunraysia wheels so it's pretty close to stock. Today I have noticed that the when I turn left I can hear what appears to be my CV clicking. I haven't been offroad and the car has been driven like a granny during the break in period. Do you think the wheels and tires could be the cause if it is infact the cv joint and do you think that my warrenty will be void with the aftermarket wheels. Cheers

Have you checked that the lugs on the tyres arent hitting the body somewhere when you turn?

how close is the positive offset rims to the break calliper. most run negative offset rims on jimnys.

check for witness marks on the inside of the rim.

Pretty much guarantee that it will be the rim touching something

Thanks for the input guy's. Rim brand is dynamic wheels and the offset is +3. The stock rims were +5. Got the rims and tires fitted by jax tyres and was a confirmed fit. Can't see any rocks stuck in the tread either. All I can say is they're not hub cetric as most aftermarket wheels arn't. Hub bore is 110 and the stock was 108.4. The rims are closest fit to stock and the tyres are stock size but just 205 70 MT's. The car goes in for it's first service so hopefully they will find the problem but just worried my warrenty will be void.

when i changed my wheel nuts i found that for quite a few weeks under brake & when turning i could here a bit of a click & couldn't figure out what it was. turned out it was the wheel nuts not being bedded fully as the shape of where they contacted the rim was slightly different do the stock nuts. i also found in this period i could tighten them slightly every now & then. after that initial few weeks they bedded in & no problems now. you possibly have a similar issue ?

Only if they cause undue damage. If it were a CV might make the process more difficult

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I could understand if the tyre was oversized and rim was of a serious negative offset it's for this reason I stuck within the stock size rim and tyre. They will do anything to get out of warrenty.

Pretty sure jimnys are lug centric , so centre bore shouldn't be to much of a problem.

Had a look at a new jimny today whilst I was getting my service. Fronts are hub centric 100% as they sit firmly around the hub with no gap but pretty sure the rears are lug centric though as they appear to sit beside the hub supported by only the lugs. They had a look at my wheels today and all the lugs are tight. Might have been a rock stuck in the tyre or something as the noise has now gone. Thanks for the info guy's!

No. They are LUG centric regardless of a lack of clearance of the centre bore. The front hub does NOT support the rim.

X2. You don't often hear a Jimny described as a lemon - usually that term is reserved for VW or GM branded cars!

I just thought I would mention it - the hub-centric/lug-centric question is determined more by the rim than anything else, and you can find vehicles which are supplied from the factory with both styles of rim - I own one such vehicle - purchase it with steel rims and you will get lug-centric rims, purchase it with the factory alloys and thoise are hub centric.

Look at the lug holes on the rim - do they have a flat surface where the lug nut seats - if they do, it's a hub-centric rim and requires a shank nut with a flat washer - the hole will be oversized relative to the stud to allow the rim to locate on the lip of the hub.

If the lug nut seats are tapered, you are looking at a lug-centric rim - and the lug nuts must have a matching taper - it is this taper that locates the rim.

Having pointed that out - you cannot fit a hub-centric rim to a vehicle that has no locating lip, you can however fit lug-centric rims to any vehicle as long as the center bore of the rim is large enough to allow the rim to center on the lugs.

To second your point there Fordem, my 2013 Defender runs hub centric with alloy rims and lug centric with steel rims - the lug nuts are specific to the rim.

However, Jimny's are lug centric regardless because the lug seat is tapered regardless of the rim type fitted.

Now lets see if trevnuts can start another thread about this issue to see if he can get the answer he wants.

Steve.

Hi Guy's I'm new here but I can confirm that Jimny wheels are in fact hub centric & the Jimny is a lemon.

I think you were right mate. Wheels were taken off inspected and put back on. Noise has gone. I'd say it was something related to the lugs not bedded in.

I'm new to suzuki jimny's and 4x4's in general. My last car was a 2006 vz thunder ute 6 ltr v8 so going from such a different car to a 4x4 the hub set up looked totally different to me. I never even contemplated what lug and hub centric was until I saw a gap from the wheel hub and centerbore of the rim and upon reading up about it I got the impression that it is bad to have this gap because the lugs take all the weight when it should be sitting on the hub aswell to take the weight. It's just different to what I'm used to

If your lugs need to "bed" in, then you're either using the wrong lugs for the rim, or a cheap poorly formed rim.

another thing to note, jimnys did come with steel wheels. mine had stock steel wheels. in the rear there was a plastic insert to cover up the axle end.
these plastic bits definitely do not locate the wheels on the hub, the lugs do.
as for the front, undo the lugs and the wheel will fall off straight away, as the stock steel wheel tolerance is not fine enough to locate it on anything.

sounds like your wheel nuts were just loose...

Can just confirm the jimny is not a lemon lol. Yeah turns out the steel hub caps on the rear wheels were the cause for the lugs to wear out the stud holes in the wheel for some reason? I have since taken the caps off and dynamic wheels are now aware. If you run after market wheels I'd check out the stud bores in the wheel for any sign of wear if you're running steel wheel caps.

There is no way a push fit, cosmetic center cap can cause the lug holes on the rims to wear - the problem has to lie elsewhere - either the rims don't seat properly and the lugs are being tightened in an attempt to force them to seat or possibly the lug nuts are being incorrectly tightened with an impact wrench .
