So anyway I have sold my steelies off of my new jimny 8O (regret it big time) and now I want to buy some new factory alloy or steel wheels again as I don't like the new sunnies I have just put on. I rang von bibra parts service center and was quoted $350 each for the genuine suzuki steel modulars and about $1000 each for the new alloys that come as a $1000 option on the new jimnys. Wtf that is just highway robbery. Who would pay that? Anyway I'm just going to shop around suzuki wreckers or something. Does anyone know if I can buy direct off suzuki somewhere for a cheaper price. I would kindly spend $1000 on some new 2015 jimny alloys. Cheers

750 that's still crazy. Yeah been searching on gumtree but nothing in my area. If I didn't sell my steelies I would have powder coated them black but still would prefer genuine alloys powder coated black. Something will pop up eventually.

Standard wheels come on sale regularly. Usually much cheaper than any new aftermarket rims.

Check Gumtree, Ebay, Forums. Call Suzuki shops and wreckers.

What is so WTF about the new sunny rims you bought?

The sunnies look great but just don't fit like the stock wheels which are centered on the hub. There is about a mm and a half gap from the centerbore with the sunnies. The standard wheels it doesn't have this gap. I'd rather a factory fit and not have wheels supported by only the lugs. Fact of the matter is most aftermarket wheels are lug centric unless you use hub centric rings.

If anyone has any good condition alloys I'd consider a swap with cash your way. Pref after the late model alloys. The sunnies are dynamic wheels 15x6 139.7 with pos 3 offset and are only a few weeks old.

Fact of the matter is most aftermarket wheels are lug-centric and adding hub rings will not magically make them hub-centric.

There's a reason why they're called hub centric rings but still it's not the same as a hub centric wheel.

Hub rings are used to center hub-centric rims on a vehicle which would normally take a rim with a smaller bore - they do NOT, and can NOT, make a lug-centric rim, hub-centric.

I get the feeling that you are not familiar with hub-centric rim - if you were you would probably find it a lot easier to understand the subtle but significant differences - I put the gist of this in the other thread, but I'll repeat it here...

The essential difference between a hub-centric rim and a lug-centric rim is how it is located when fitted to the vehicle - lug-centric rims are located AND secured by the lugs, or more specifically the taper of the lug nuts fitting into a matching taper on the rim; hub-centric rims are located by the close fit between the hub bore and the spigot of the hub and secured by the lug nuts.

The actual design & construction of the two rims is different - as mentioned before lug-centric rims have tapered seats to accommodate the lug nuts, and allow them to locate the rim, hub-centric rims do not - instead these will have a flat surface and an enlarged hole for the lug - special shanked lug nuts with flat seats & washers are required to permit the rim to be clamped to the hub without interference with the locating process.

Hopefully the above explanation will enable you to understand that regardless of how closely a lug-centric rim fits the hub spigot, and whether or not a hub ring is fitted - the taper of the lug nuts will always be the locating factor.

Why has this come up again? I thought it was done and dusted in the other thread? Jimny's are lug centric.

The proof is in fordem's answer.

'caus apparently buying a set of rims that you're not happy with makes the car a lemon..??? :?

And all those other Jimnys getting around on their lug centric steel rims must be just lucky I guess.

Approximately every Japanese 4WD of the last 50 years has been lug centric. They must be lemons too.

as everyone else above me has already said, what you said here makes no sense.... even the factory wheels on the jimny are only located by the lugs.. not the hub. it does not matter about this gap you talk of with the sunnies, it's irrelevant and makes no difference and is not the cause of your problem that you described in another thread. Keep the sunnies, take the car to the dealer, ask them wtf the noise is, get it fixed and be done with it. it'l probably get done under warranty too.

Thanks steve just read that in the other thread too after i posted :)

So Trevnutz, stop being paranoid about the 1mm gap that the sunnies have around the hub, keep them , they look good. This gap doesn't mean shit (excuse the french).

I can also confirm my 2015 Jimny that has the gunmetal colour alloys IS lug centric, I've had the wheels off numerous times and as others have mentioned, the lugs and holes on the wheels ARE tapered and it does not use the hub to locate - even though yes you are correct they have made it a pretty snug fit around the hub - on the front, but not on the rear... but all that is irrelevant. My wheels /nuts are all the same front or rear , tapered and lug centric.

get over it Trev, stop being a worry wort and worrying about shit that is irrelevant. I think you should keep the wheels you just forked out probably a decent sum for, there is nothing wrong with them.

Trevnutz - where are you? - I gather somewhere north, like Qld?
We have some as new take off alloy rims (x2 sets) from 2014/15 Jimny, but they are in Vic.
PM if you want.

Steve.

I only thought my car was a lemon because I thought the cv joint was making a noise. I took the car in for a service and got them to check the wheels and they said that the lugs were tight and since then the noise has gone. Ocd isn't easy to live with so easy with the comments. I just need some reassurance so I get opinions on what you guy's think on this forum.

OCD or not, you had your answer in the first reply. It was reinforced by numerous other posts. Nobody expressed a contrary view or supported your opinion. Unusually, the response was unanimous.

Please respect the knowledge and experience of the members of this forum. If you want to keep asking the same question until you find someone who will agree with you, there are plenty of Facebook groups that will cater to you. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but its one of my pet hates with a forum.

Whilst I will endeavour to go easy with the comments, also consider that this is a forum with members with a deep and comprehensive mechanical knowledge, and lots of practical experience, who are quite sympathetic to Suzukis. Claiming your car is a "lemon" (implying a car with consistent, ongoing, and significant problems) in a thread title for what turned out to be inconsequential and non-mechanical noise might be a bit of an overstatement, you think?

Take your time, relax a bit and have a sense of humour. you'll do fine. It hasn't even started death wobbling yet. There's time for all the citrus flavours yet.

Totally understand. I don't even know if I want to lift it 50mm now because of this death wobble so you speak. Ever since the new sunnies and muddies got put on I have already started getting minor wobble so this is were this gap in the centerbore and the hub annoys me because I dont think it's balanced properly. As it sits there is hardly a gap on top of the centerbore/hub but like a 1.5mm down the bottom (depending on rotation of the tyre) It's hard to explain but maybe I can put pics up.

The minor wobble will be due to the added weight of the tyre and rim. Jimny's are extremely sensitive to this. even swapping from auto to manual hubs has induced shimmy in a car I know of.

Heavy wheels and tyres are rarely as round as lighter tyres, and round isn't the same as balanced - it's perfectly possible to balance a very out of round tyre.

It's why you should run two sets of wheels and tyres on a Jimny if it's used on road, one for road use (stock) and another set for the bush, which will always be hard/impossible to keep balanced. I haven't had a 4WD tyre balanced for 15 years. It's pointless on a wheel/tyre combination that goes offroad - the weights fall off eventually anyway.

Thanks your time time mate. Yeah jist have to take the good with the bad. Do you think 205 70 mts would weigh considerably a lot more than the stock tyres? This is why I didn't upsize to 215 75's. The sunnies are almost stock size too with pos 3 offset so nothing to crazy

Yes. You've fitted LT tyres which are substantially heavier along with heavier rims. In a Jimny, even 150g of added weight is enough to start a shimmy.
