Hi everybody,

Jimny noob with not much mechanical aptitude here so apologies in advance. I have a 99 Jimny manual with 150k on the clock that has developed a whine that is very similar to the one in this thread

Basically there is no whine until the vehicle is under power (2wd) and the whine occurs when the clutch is both in and out. One thing that may be related is the whine decreases when going from 4th to 5th.

I've had a bit of a wiggle of all of the shafts underneath and noticed the one that goes from the transfer case to the front diff has a bit of wiggle to it.

Would that be a likely source of the issue or is there always a bit of wiggle to that shaft?

I will be getting her into the shop asap. Any recomendations for good transmission people in Perth (ideally close to East Perth)?

My GV also has a whine under acceleration. It is OK when cruising, or when slowly getting up to speed, but as soon as I put the foot down, the whine starts.

Maybe I should drive it with the missus NOT in the passenger seat and see if the whine is still there!

Mine has a whine under power as well. Not sure if it is the transfer or the manual transmission. I just ignore it now. It still works OK. I am just going to wait for something to break and find out then where it is.

And the answer is... gearbox rebuild.

$2150 for drive in, drive away job with a heavy-duty clutch done at the same time by Australian Differential and Transmission Services in Osborne Park (Perth). $200 cheaper and very quick turnaround, (1.5 days vs. 4 days) compared toanother place I looked in to.

Whine has gone away completely.

My Jimny is an auto and has a slight whine under power...Ive taken the same approach and ignored it....

So when they rebuilt your gear box did they say what was wrong with the old one or what they replaced?

Another observation that I have made is that on the cold mornings in Melbourne when the oil is thick I don't have any whine or at least its much quieter. I use 75W-90 Valvoline Duragear oil in my gear box and 80W-90 Hypoid gear oil in the transfer . Does anyone use a heavier oil?

I have a whine in my rear diff. 99.9% sure its r&p. As it has new bearings and is setup correctly. I'm going to try heaver oil and see if it changes it.
