You haven't said what zook, carby or inj, or particulars.

Also did it always run rough?

Is the car new to you and you don't know how long the problem has been there?

Did the problem occur suddenly or over time?

Particulars will help. But I'm taking a punt your talking about a carby Sierra.

Remove the jets and see if they are clean. Clean them up.

Fuel filter. It's cheap, replace it.

As cairns says, vacuum hoses. If they are cracked or leaking, or if there are any hoses unplugged it will make some cylinders run lean.

That's carbs for starters.

Pull each HT lead off the plugs with the motor running. Does the motor run rougher or stay the same? If it runs rougher then you have some spark. If removing a single lead does not make it run rougher then there is little or no spark from that cylinder.

That may mean you need to replace the spark plugs or leads. Or it may mean vacuum hoses are dragging air in and the lean mixture doesn't fire well.

Other than this the only thing I can think of is poor fuel delivery because of fuel pump. That's just off the top of my head

Important to note that changing the plugs and leads do not guarantee that there isn't a misfire.

With the engine running, as close to idle as possible, pull each lead off the plug one at a time. If the idle gets rougher then that cylinder is firing at least partially. In other terms, the motor suffers when you remove the ability for that cylinder to fire.

If you remove the lead and there is no change, then that cylinder is not firing. Begin to work on the problem from there.

So the vac hoses are new, that's a good start. Search the engine for somewhere a vac hose should be but perhaps isn't. Anywhere air may be letting itself into the manifold for example.

As well, my post above gives you other things to try. Pulling the jets and cleaning them for example.

I also recently found a fault in wiring that made a Sierra run like crap. Someone had wired some solenoid controlled contact point gizmo into the charging circuit, making the alternator appear faulty and the idle impossible. Has anyone been mucking around with something?

Again, it might help if we knew if this problem surfaced quickly, over time or was always there.

Ah righto..

I'd still look at doing the bits I've suggested, ie. pull each spark plug and check for changes to the idle and clean the carby jets.

Remove and clean contact points such as dizzy plugs and Earthing points. If you have a multimeter check for resistance on earthing between the motor/alternator and negative terminal.

I'd also be suspicious of damage to fuel lines. Check them from back to front in case there's damage letting air or dirt in. Also check fuel delivery.

Failing that, check alternator function. One of mine idled terribly and ended up being a wiring problem causing the alternator to function badly which affected the idle. That's a long shot but easy to check.

If those don't show up a result, start checking for engine damage such as signs of head gasket failure.

That about sums up what I can think of. Hope there's some help there
