Hey everyone.

I have been looking around and can't find an answer to my question, and I would love to hear some opinions too.

So after going crazy and doing anything to my Sierra just "cause", I am trying to plan my jimny build a bit better.
Lift is something that still eludes me. Extra ground clearance would be nice, but I plan to get sliders anyways, so it's a "meh" kind of situation really.

However, I wanted to know, how much clearance do you lose after putting sliders on? Is it more of a necessity to get a lift to justify losing height from the sliders again? The only lift I'm half looking at is a 40mm, probably EFS.

I use my jimny as a daily, light tourer and weekend wheeler. So I won't be going nuts on the trails, but I know from my last few trips out, my sills liked to touch the rocks.

TL:DR, do I need lift to justify losing height for sliders?

If you use 50mm pipe or RHS with 10mm clearance, maths indicates you loose 60mm clearance.

if you dont want your sliders to touch things, don't get sliders
the point of them is you can drive your car over rocks without damaging the body/door frame/ sills

to make your car more capable over that kind of terrain put lockers and gearing and tall tires under it.

i didn't have to worry about that terrain where i live. so in the end i took the sliders off.

U could go a formed sheet body mounted slider if u r not going crazy in the rocks. It will be enough to stop damage if u bottom out in a rut just not if u drop off a ledge on to a rock.

I was looking at Tanshi's sliders (ADD Engineering), I obviously get that the point of the sliders is to use them as a sacrificial part.

But my point is, if I put sliders on a stock jimny, I'm obviously losing a fair amount of clearance. So is it worth putting them on and getting them hit on everything where my sills normally wouldn't hit. Or is it more beneficial to raise the jimny so the sills are obviously higher, then put sliders on to protect them.

I don't do a heap of rock hopping or anything, it's just I'd like to keep the car respectable and not destroy the sills.

I would go the sliders without lift.
In my experience if you hit the sliders you would have damaged the sills anyway.
With sliders almost every time I can keep driving (sliding) and not be stuck even with less clearance. Without sliders I had damage.

You only lose clearance under the sill, not under the chassis except for the thickness of the chassis bracket/clamp, ~8-10mm.

If you are worried about clearing objects that close to the sill then sill damage is also likely.
Proper designed sliders will slide, not snag, so they should enable more capability (read: driver confidence) even if you do bottom out on them.

Awesome. Makes sense to me now haha.
Appreciate your input.

Certainly seems as if I'll be keeping this jimny at stock height.

While we're on the topic of protection; is it beneficial to have a transfer guard and fuel tank guard with sliders also?

Obviously protection is good, but I've read a fair amount where people take them off because they fill up with mud and sand and shit and turn into a big mess then never put them on again.

IMO you're better off going without until you notice you're starting to bang things, then protect accordingly. I've got no sliders or bash guards at all under my sierra. The sills are a bit wonky but not too bad, and everything else seems happy to take the odd knock now and then. Generally my diff housings are what's making contact anyway.

Biggest issue with the Jimnys are the plastics - a good knock to the sill and all the clips break and your rear plastics fall off or start flapping in the breeze. I'd go along the lines of what got_bar_work said, and re-enforce the sills rather than hanging sliders under there. If you really wanted to commit to it, you could go along the lines of integrated sliders like Shandy92 did on his vitara:

This is what sills end up looking like when not protected accordingly...
Needing something heavy to smash them down again to get the door open.

In other news, I sold my sliders ages ago, and I (practicing on my bender) made a new set :D As some know jimny's have an extra 80mm of sill under the door, so as to not loose any ground clearance I notched the sill (didn't cut out) and welded my slider in there. The slider is about 120mm wide and should hold the rock off my panels a bit better.
Yes I know I should of capped my bottom tube.

I need to buy a notched cause I'm pretty sick of doing this with a 5"

When I drive my stock height jim on rocks I find where I bash the most is where the front radius arms mount to the chassis. Because I run baby tyres and have stuff all ground clearance I always try to put them on the biggest rocks so I find thats where I hit the most. I often find the car sliding on the radius arms well before I stress about the sills.

Jimnys have the best built in sill protection..... Radius arm mounts!

They get stuck on everything long before you come close to damaging the sills.

Based on my experience I'd be getting a set of those guards/sliders for the arm mounts first (they are a pain in the arse to straighten after every half decent trip).
Then transfer case guard (I smacked my a number of times, but was lucky enough not to break anything).

Then for the plastics. My misses had the best thoughts, "when we come home from a trip with a piece of plastic tied to the roof then we'll think about what we need to replace it with."
That was our logic for the front bumper and the sills, never found the need for a bullbar or sliders. [emoji4]

i made some 'sill protectors', not really a slider as such but similar i guess. the driver's side copped a hard it on some rocks on sunday & it's still fine, if it wasn't there it'd have ruined the plastics i'm sure.

i looked at the ADD set & freight costs killed them for me, but also the weight was more than i was willing to add for what they do.

i also have a home job transfer case guard that hasn't been tested yet, but need radius arm mount guards as i've stuffed mine already =(
