Hi Guys.. First post so please be gentle.. We are on the last leg of installing a 1600 Baleno efi engine into our Sierra. It turns over , has spark, compression, air , but not sure if there is enough fuel pressure to open the injectors.. Can someone please tell me what psi etc the fuel pressure should be. I have a gauge to test but can't find the value.

Around 45psi from memory. Assuming you have an EFI fuel pump its the regulator on the fuel rail that determines this, not the pump or the injectors. The injectors are opened by electrical power, not fuel pressure.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I have 3 things to sus out tomorrow. I have new plugs as the old ones look "old" and dirty. I have borrow a gauge to check fuel pressure and a stethiscope to have a listen to see if the injectors are firing. I have upgraded to the appropriate fuel tank for the EFI and have new fuel lines and it is soo close to starting when I squirt some "start you @$#%&*" in the intake but it just won't fire up . I have set fir to the engine bay 3 times so far as it back fires after a while. No damage done but gets the heart racing..There is no 'temp sensor " fitted yet not oil pressure switch wired in yet . Will it still start without these 2 "sensors" not plugged in..Ity has been an epic job getting the 1600 efi installed and I am soooo looking forward to hearing that sucker running.

The engine will run without the oil pressure switch connected.
I'm not sure it will run without any reference to intake temperature, I'd expect it to, although it's likely to run very rich.

It's not hard to hear the injectors running.

The engine will normally start (or attempt to start) with widely varying fuel pressure. Fuel pressure isn't monitored by the ECU so it will assume it's normal. You'll get popping and banging and chugging and smell combustion.

Sorry.. We have the air temp sensor installed but no "coolant temp sensor" which i assume would control "choke" . There is one coming from ebay. Sounds promising about the fuel pressure. I didn't get a chance to do anything to it today as I got called out to do a favor for my daughter.. Tomorrow i will do plugs and some testing... Should i be able to hear the injectors firing when it is just turning over from starter motor. I though I probably should hear them.. Will update with results..Cheers..

Spray a small amount of fuel in throttle body/manifold and if it starts then your issue is fuel related

Sounds like similar symptoms ive seen on a few where the crank angle sensor isnt positioned close enough to crank.
It may be necessary to shave a mm or so of the crank sensor so it sits a little deeper

Hmmm ok.. We did have to cut and reweld the front of the sump for the CAS to fit on..We have used half a can of "start you @#$%&*!" in the manifold but it still wont fire up.. Will investigate the CAS after running a couple of tests.. Waiting for a friend to come and help..

Sorry this is probably so obvious but just checking the flow direction of the fuel rails.. Am I right in assuming that it comes into the fuel rail from the back (fire wall) end and flows past the injectors and out via the small vacuum thing that is there, then returns to the tank via the smaller hose.

Yes, you are, and the "vacuum thing" is the fuel pressure regulator.

Ok thanks. I am beginning to think I have a fuel pump problem because I can get it to run as long as I keep spraying fuel into the air intake manifold. I wonder how generic the fuel pump is. I have a spare subaru one here..lol. I still haven't checked the flow rate as I haven't had a helper all day. Will try again tomorrow..Thanks for your help guys..soo close now..soo close. It has been a much bigger job than we thought..

When you key the ignition to the "ON" position do you hear the pump run for 2-3 seconds?
You might also hear the fuel pump relay click on and off in time with this.

99% of pumps require a pre pump to a surge tank then the primary pump. There are very few self priming pumps on the market able to be run inline above the tank on there own

Yeah - I think we need to go back to first principles here.

What fuel pump are you running? Where is it mounted?

Do you hear the pump prime as per my last reply.

We got a 2nd hand tank to suit the efi and it has a stock pump inside the tank. I think it is out of a Vitara . You can here it prime when you turn the ignition and after a few seconds it goes off. I am sure it's problem is lack of fuel as it runs briefly with a squirt of fuel into the air intake. Cheers..

if it's too hard to hear the injectors ticking on cranking, unplug an injector and put a test light on it. Light flashing when you're cranking= no fuel at the rail. Light not flashing = computer not happy about something (or not wired properly) and not providing you with an injector pulse.

Hmmmm. So I have good fuel flow at the rail .
Injector #4 flashes ..BUT...inj #1 and #2 and #3 do not flash....this makes me think it is a harness or ecu problem... This may explain why is sounds like it wants to run, but on 1 cylinder only  Thoughts ???

Ok first things first , is this the first of the baleno with a distributor or a coil pack engine? if its the first of the baleno and you have changed the camshaft and distributor from a vitara and not changed the trigger wheel in the dizzy then you are not getting a home signal to fire the injectors. Will basically fire once then gets confused because there is no "home trigger" that the ecu needs to see.

Regardless , have you tried jumping the diagnostic port to see any error codes ?

basically with ignition on all injectors get power , they are triggered by the ecu earthing them out. the drivers for triggering the injectors are run off the same internal earth through the ecu. i doubt you have a faulty ecu or a wiring problem im betting its a triggering problem derived from a dizzy. If not dizzy and runs a cam and crank position sensor then im betting on a problem with the triggers on either the camshaft or crank sprocket.

Ideally get the check engine light working and jump the diagnostic port to see what the ecu is telling you it is missing.

Fuel flow and fuel pressure are also 2 different things , you can have good fuel flow and no pressure and vise versa. multipoint efi on suzuki usually need a minimum 35 psi to run properly.

Any backfires ???
I still reckon crank angle sensor needs a mm or so taken off so sits a lil deeper

I have already ground a mm or so of the CAS.. Made no difference..was reeeealy hoping that would fix the problem..
It is a coil pac version.. Can't run diags as it is not fully installed. Still waiting on "guru" to turn up and finish it off. In the meantime I am doing some fault finding. I thought it was strange that only #4 injector is lighting up the test light. I also got a charcoal canister off a wrx and installed it this afternoon which tidied up the last remaining 2 hoses that had no where to go.. one was vacuum and the other tank breather.. Here is a photo of the engine compartment. Still messy around the battery area as the old harness is still there as we need to get the oil pressure wire, coolant temp and a couple of other things out of it. The dash is all still out as we are trying to get the tacho to work by pulling a baleno instrument panel apart and swapping stuff around.. That has proved fruitless so far...

Tomorrow I will test the continuity of the wiring harness from ecu plug to the injectors in case there is a problem there. Also "guru" is going to borrow another ecu to test..as well as hooking up the rest of the wiring mess. I am glad he knows where it all goes.

There is only 4 wires that you need to connect to run this motor
If you have retained the factory fuse box you can bridge ports to flash diagnosis codes.
Heres the loom i do for baleno motor

Most important for the injectors is the orange and black earths on the engine bay harness.
I normally earth them to one of the bolts where clutch cable comes through the firewall
