I have just bought myself a 92 Vitara and I'm having a little bit of an issue with the idle. I'm an Aussie living in Bali and as you can imagine it's a bit hard to find a good mechanic here and get my point across! I've just got it back from a Suzuki service centre where I got them to do a once over from the ground up. Before it went in, it was idling to high at 1600rpm. After I got it back, it was idling at 1000rpm but pretty rough. The mechanic came out and all he really did was wind the idle up again! It is fine while driving, just the idle. I don't know a lot about carbys but is my best option to get a rebuild kit and see if that gets it running a bit smoother or is there some tricks I can try before I got that far?

Download a factory service manual and "baseline" the carby. Do this before you consider a rebuild. By now a 1992 model will have been fiddles with by many hands who all thought they were "tuning" it or making it better. The end result can be a combination of adjustments and workarounds that are impossible to get right.

Obviously consider plug leads/plugs/timing/distributor cap. Poor idle quality can be caused by poor ignition performance as easily as by poor carburettor performance. Also, ensure the problem isn't a vacuum leak.

Avoid the temptation to pull the carby apart to "have a look". They're complex and you need to ensure it goes back properly.

Thanks Gwagensteve. I've got a copy of a workshop manual so I'll give that a shot. It's got a new coil, plugs and distributor so I think the electrics are covered. I'll see if I can find a vacuum leak in the next few days and I'm hoping the Suzuki mechanic sorted the timing out. It also occasionally has run on when I shut it off so I guess that could point to a vacuum leak too? Or just carbon build up. Hopefully have her running smooth as silk soon
