My sierra has always made a very slight noise when sitting in neutral with foot off the clutch. When I push down the clutch peddle noise disappears. Take foot off the clutch and just as you hit where the bite point of clutch would be if in gear the noise comes back.
Recently when engine is cold and starting the car with it it reving higher the noise has been worse and has made me feel its time to fix. When warm and revs drop barely any noise again.
Noise is a whine I guess
My thoughts were check adjustment of cable, loosen it and see if it stops (poss throw out bearing) Otherwise Im thinking pilot bearing
Gearbox input shaft bearing most likely. It wont be totally silent in a Sierra but if there's metal in your oil I'd consider a rebuild.
Anyone with any sort of mechanical skills could pull a Sierra gearbox out and rebuild it in a weekend, they're very simple and easy to work on. Rebuild kits are cheap too.
If the noise disappears when the clutch is depressed, it's going to be "downstream" from the clutch, in other words in the transmission itself - the clutch release or throw out bearing (btw this is the first time I've seen it referred to as throw out bearing here, most folks seem to call it a thrust bearing, which in my mind is something else) should only rotate when the clutch pedal is depressed, so a defective bearing would normally be silent until then, and the same goes for the pilot shaft bearing.
Start by checking the oil level, if it's low top it up before doing anything else.

Thanks for the help guys appreciate it. Checked oil and had some small bits, black from oil and grit looking bits stuck to drain plug. Decided to be brave and dropped gearbox out. Bit of a mission but did it. Was trying to be careful as to where anything went but when i wiggled gearbox out a ballbearing and a thin metal pin/rod like out of a needle bearing dropped on me. Not sure yet where from (if they even came from the box and not just out the car hole in floor. Also not sure what damage there is yet as decided to have coffee break once box was out. Will head into the shed for a look next. Cheers guys
