Took gearbox out. Making a small whine.
Had loads of sand and crud in bell housing and round throw out bearing. Gave a clean and will replace throw out and pilot maybe clutch. But before i give myself loads of uneccesary work i figured i would ask you guys

Do i need any special tools. I have the normal stuff. No pullers or presses.

You could get the worn spigot welded up and turned back down when you have the shaft out. A good engineering shop could do that for you.

What is the gearbox from?

Sierra 1.3 soft top leafy 1994.
Has a 1.6 block
Based brisbane northside
Would welding not weaken it and cost as much as a new one anyway.
I certainly dont know anyone so would be paying for their time.
Appreciate the help.

I so want to have a go at a rebuild.
Anyone got a FSM they could email me.

Just seen that Lowrange do 1.3 input shafts pretty cheap (USD129) so might be easier to go that route with one of their bearing and synchro kits.

You can try a double ball deep grove bearing instead of standard input bearing.
It's the same diameters but wider
Cant remember part number but bearing shop should have one.
Fit flush on clutch side of fly wheel, the unworn part of shaft should be supported on the wider bearing.

Another option that does not involve heating the shaft and possibly destroying it is to turn it to a smaller diameter and then make an interference fit sleeve - as above, any good engineering shop should be able to handle that.

I like the idea of putting a wider bearing on. May work and I think I read a post somewhere so thanks for that.

As an update I went to Suzi store in lawnton just coz it's close to me.

They were unable to sell either a new or used input shaft. Stated he hadn't sold one in years.

He suggested metal putty stuff on the shaft to fill the worn bit. Then shape it.
I'm not keen on this option as it's unlikely to be round and stay on if I do it.

He also said he would just stick it back and use it as it was.
If I do is the only risk wearing the bearing premature or worse

He quoted 400 for a transmission rebuild kit and about 400 in labour but then said it could cost more depending what they find. This was with me bringing the tranny into him off the car.
I thought that was fairly steep considering low range sell a full rebuilt transmission for 600

The low range rebuild kit plus a new input shaft and postage was about 400 so I may go that way.
I've never used them before what's delivery time like.

I'm thinking change pilot bearing. Put it all back together as is.
Drive it until the Low Range Stuff arrives then do a rebuild myself.

6200 is for the single row. I used a rubber seal last time, ntn brand - LLU or 2rs would be fine. Not zz(metal seal)

5200 seems to be the Double row with the seals llu or 2rs etc * 14mm wide

4200 seems to be Double row no seals






The only thing that can be tricky, Later on if you have to take the flywheel off for some reason, You have to pull the bearing out to get a socket or spanner onto the flywheel bolts. I used a dyna bolt to pull it out with a slide hammer(farm fab). Other ways can get it out though.

Rebuilding the gearbox is fairly simple with a press. Just changing the input is even simpler. I may be able to supply another input if you go that way.

I reckon the simplest fix would be simply get another gearbox. Secondhand gearboxes are abundant. I gave one away 3 weeks ago.
