Hi all
I decided to identify the noise in my 1998 J20A engined GV and as thought it was the Generator Idler Pulley bearing.
I went to take the pulley nut off and the whole stud came out of the block as the nut had seized.
When the bolt came out so did some coolant as the stud seems to go into the coolant space.
Any thoughts/advice on reinserting the stud and is there some sort of sealant/Loctite required for this application.

Are you talking about the idler pulley on the timing chain cover? As far as I'm aware the front cover is a "stand alone" piece - no coolant (or any other fluid for that matter).

Your right, should only be oil behind that stud.

On hindsight and another photo I see the stud goes through the cover from the block.

On your last photo that is the stud down towards the bottom of the picture.
Will be looking at either Loctite 243 medium strength, some oil tolerance thread locker or something like the Peratex high performance sealant.
No idea why the stud hole meets the coolant system.
The car has been in our family since new in 98 so its service history is solid and I am not aware of any work on this stud and/or its thread hole.

Just an update for everyone.
Drained the radiator fluid, with the stud still pulled out used carby cleaner with the long thin plastic tube (that usually comes with spray cans), to clean the threaded hole out and let dry.
With the stud cleaned up applied some Permatix Thread Locker (blue) thread sealant to its base thread and reinserted back into the block,
Note - before putting the stud back in with the sealant, screwed it back into the block till tight and measured its protruding length in case it was screwed in too far. All good in this case.
Let dry overnight, fitted a brand new Dayco Gen Idler Pulley (P/N 89179) which looks to be an exact replacement to the OEM pulley, refitted the pulley nut, belt back on and new radiator fluid and all done.
The Dayco pulley was $65 from Autopro if anyone is after one. They are slightly cheaper on line but obviously take longer to come in than overnight.
Checked the oil after starting and after driving the next day and no water in oil.
Also bought a new bearing to rebuild the original pulley for a spare.
I am guessing the hole into the cooling system may be a block drilling point for the cooling system.
