Take your finger and separate the pleats of the boot whilst you slowly rotate the wheel - if the boot is torn or punctured you'll find out soon enough...

O yeah it's torn and grease coming out. But is it normal for there to be grease everywhere inside.I just always assumed the cv was a bit more like a sealed bearing and the cover was more like a dust cover than a grease seal.
The boot does both - it keeps the grease inside the joint and the dirt outside - if the boot gets a tiny hole, the centrifugal force will the grease everywhere - the inside of the rim, the wheel arch, literally everything gets grease.
