Hey folks!

Just taking a G13A apart for a clean up and make it pretty. While it's apart I'm doing the obvious, timing gear, water pump and seals. But I'm undecided if I should take the oil pump apart for a clean up or just leave it. I haven't much history on the motor, is it worth a tinker and new Gasket or just leave it the hell alone?

How gunky is it? Obvious lack of oil changes etc? If it's cleanish I wouldn't bother, if it's gunked up might be worth a clean

Well the oil that come out was pretty crap and it hasn't been run for a few years. I was intending to run some fresh oil through it when I've got it back together and dump it after a few hours running..

This is what I did - the oil pump was making an awful screeching noise after being left with what looked like black modelling clay for oil in the engine for the previous 5 years. A new filter, clean out of the sump pickup screen and new oil significantly improved things but didn't completely clear up the noise. If I have the engine in bit I would definitely do the pump - at least give it a thorough inspection. If you have no weird noises and the motor is running well then the oil change is probably enough.

I'm going to order the Gasket and pull it apart. A good clean out won't do it any harm

Any other bits in there that should be replaced while I'm at it? I haven't had one apart but the diagram looks like there's a pressure relief valve and a couple of parts. Any prone to wearing?

I would say no, but if it's out of an engine that wasn't properly maintained then anything is possible - as has been suggested, start by taking a look at the pick up screen, if that is crusty & blocked, then yes, you might have issues.

Sump hasn't come off yet but it will soon. The block and head is getting a coat of enamel engine paint tomorrow then I'll be able to strip the last bits off. I'll probably get the oil pickup right off and clean it up, I'll pull the oil pump and give it some love.

I've ordered all the parts I know I need from Megazip tonight, so I've got time before I can put it all back together. Will just have to wait until I pull it apart to see if I need any other bits hopefully should be fine though

FWIW whilst you've got the sump off it's worth pulling some bearing caps and checking some bearings. They were delaminating on mine.

Personally, if it worked fine before I'd probably leave the pump alone. Aside from Bammos comment I don't think I've heard of anyone having trouble with one on a G series?

And A screeching noise is usually a blocked pickup perhaps?
