Wow it got even uglier. Mad.

Been doing a little product testing of the small SUV class for work recently and my conclusion for the "new" jimny if it will exist to be successful is a good 6-8 speed automatic gearbox.

Comparing the Renault duster with it 2L 4 speed auto compared with the Creta 1.6 6 speed it was night and day. The extra low first would be great off-road also.

I'm pretty happy with the retro look, if It comes out with a turbo engine I'll probably get one, good auto would be nice.

What will it do for the price of the current Jimny? Drop it or maintain?

Considering I'm still seeing 2012 model Jimnys selling for 15-16k, I'm going to say the new model won't have much effect on over priced old Jimnys. ;)

I love the way I was right about the next model retaining solid axels.

It's a fantasy to think any new 4wd won't be laced with electronic aids.

Esp is a hinderence
The landrover traction control is unbelievable, suzukis attempts thus far have been worse than having nothing at all

I think the have "gone back to the old sierra shape" which was , let's be honest, also a "box of crap"

Manufacturing methods, legislation, and customer expectations have changed since the Sierra was launched in 1982. There is no chance a car with sierra pressings making up the body could be sold as a new vehicle outside the developing world.

Perhaps he's referring to "going back to the soft top Sierra shape"?

Which again, would never happen.

But I think if the new Jimny does actually look like the none camouflaged images, then that grill (or more specifically the indicator shape and location on the grill) is a close as you're going to get to old Sierra (or even LJ) stylings.

I dont get why the complains. Everyone here loves a sierra. This jimny is far closer in looks to a sierra than the current jimny is

or what? you guys wanted a rounded blurb with less clearance, smaller wheel arches, and smaller windows?

sunday soccer mum is not gonna like this car?, or her P plater daughter? .... well prob nope, and maybe a lot of the normal people out there who never hit a dirt road.. But again... so?, do we like it?. See how the new generation of the "vitara" end up, did you want the same fait for the Jimny too?.

Its "boxy"? yup, Its simple?, yup, do I like it? yup. Its full of tracktion aids?, probably, but its so the current jimnys and NGVs so its not like we have a choice. But its a brand new 4wd? yup, so at least we would have few more decades of a car to use. Old cars are cool and cheap, but everyday they get older and theres no much new to replace. And the things there are are far $$$$$$$$$$ to buy

they could have gone down this hill Image

also new pics

I like to say its bigger, but I think its just the illusion of the new boddy shape vs the old jimny. Specially when theres a good chance under the car its all the same. Like the top of the car from the doors is up square (instead of on an angle like the jimny) so the roof is bigger. But the wheel arches seems bigger too

I'm not interested in how the car looks, only how it works. And this is a huge problem for "retro" design. Taking utilitarian design cues and making them "cute" is never effective. Take for example the early mini. There's a huge amount of space inside them. The door pockets were designed to take a Gilby's gin bottle. Picnic baskets slide under the rear seats. They're awesome.

The BMW mini has very little interior space. At the time they bought mini, BMW were designing an awesome city car but binned it on the name of retro cool and an engineered brand cachet. Suzuki is doing something similar (a trend they started when they introduced the "jimny sierra" badging. (Not that they didn't have form for this though.

Any improved utility offered by the new body design is accidental and will be eroded by the use of CAN bus, small capacity torque filling turbo motors and other electronic aids. It doesn't matter how utilitarian the design cues are, actual utility will be reduced through the a reduction in simplicity.

It looks like a wider track to me, but that could just be more neg offset on the rims (looks like it).

Also worth noting - all those intrusion bars and added safety will certainly bump up the weight even further - so celebrating "more power" may be premature until you learn how much heavier they made it! Plus, it's bound to be aerodynamically worse than the current Jimny!

Looks a fair bit wider. Wheel base looks similar. Suspension looks very similar to current jimny from those pics

Doesn't look wider, lower overall height makes it look wider IMHO.

Interesting perspective. The current jimny has a lot of head room so lower overall height will work. I still think it's wider, but I could be wrong.

I get what you say Steve, but like you mention these days no new car would be build with utility/function mentality first. Those days are far long over. We know that every new car would be "softer" and full of "aids" and what not with some "retro" body on it. And that with every new generation, each would become more of a "car" rather than a "4wd". See Jeep as the perfect example, putting the Wrangler away, all their other 4wds eventually became a big SUV/high seating car thing. Same as the new Vitara. One "big car" that lives out of the name of their previous incarnations. And thats why Im happy about this new Jimny, because although it can be "cute utilitarian retro" body, at least they keep it more functional. I mean they could have build something like the Jeep Renegade. So far it looks like the same jimny but with a different body, which Im happy with the current jimny and I like the body design/looks, so a win for me

naah the rims are the same as the current facelift jimny. Not sure how many new "features" it would have in comparison with the current Jimny, but I think if theres an increase in size it would be due to the bigger body rather than the driveline which would be pretty similar to the current jimny. Unless it is a wider one?, that would be awesome, but it would be cheaper for them to keep reusing the current diffs and other parts, so not sure if they are gonna create everything 100% new. Because if so, then why keep using same size tyres/rims.

also it looks bigger because the roof size is bigger, as the car is more "square", see how the current jimny is more angled. But my doubt as if really is wider comes from the size of the wheel arches+ rear tail lights lenght/size of the door.

as in lower overall height not sure. Both have same body clearance, as the roof line height I think is more of an illusion that it is lower than the jimny, I think both are same height (or pretty close)

Hopefully more weight means more power to push it along, to be honest the performance of the m13 was laughable compared to the earlier g series jims

For the new jimny to be good it needs to use the new tech to its advantage.
6+ speed modern auto
E lockers
Good traction control
Sway bar disconnects

Would make the car

No need for lockers with decent traction control.
Aside from the 200 series and landrovers most traction control seems a hinderence offroad.
I think this jimny will be more along the lines of 05+ swb grand vitara spec

I though that might be the case, and it would be great to see it on the same size, but already seems to come with 15" wheels with 205/70/r15 tyres like current jimnys and sierras before.

Maybe they would recicle the transfer case of the GV to have a 4wd with no lock in transfer for road maners

Would love for them to have the GV engine. But prob they are gonna go with the engine of the swift or Ignis.

The article i posted in chat said it was likely to have one of their boosterjet engines. My guess would be (1.0 baleno) which is 82kW / 110hp. But they only do that in the up-spec model, while the lower ones get a 1.4l doing 68kW.

if mated to a good auto that 1.0 boosterjet would be pretty decent imo. it might get a smaller turbo for more torque though and be around 70kws.

You may be right, but the world is a very different place when compared with 2005. The tech has come a long way in Japan. Even toyota's traction control was a disaster up until a few years ago. You mentioned the 200 series, the first batch of TRC was a joke, but the new stuff is quite good. Same deal with the later model FJ's.

Don't forget the current m13a is about 62kW.. add the weight and aerodynamics of the new model and the 1.0 turbo is the only one that makes sense. But Suzuki are tards and will probably go the n/a 1.4 68kw job.

it looks wider, almost like a wide track, it could be just because it's lower as Steve said, but I'm not sure, big flares and all...I wonder if it's going to have the wobble dramas of the older Jimmy's. It would be nice with some kind of power. I might have to buy one.

Imo it will be the gearbox that will make or break the new jimny in terms of power and economy. If the current jimny with the m13 was mated to a modern 8 speed auto it would be great. The 1.0 booster jet would be even better.

For example in some recent back to back testing we did. Creta vs duster both 2017 models. The duster on paper makes more power and torque, kerb weight very similar. The duster runs an ancient 4 speed like the current jimny. It's slow, asthmatic and never feels to be in the right power range. Feels like it's tits off or bogging down. Looser converter that feels like it sucks power. The creta on the other hand with its more modern 6 speed felt responsive, always in the right gear and powerband. The converter. Felt tighter with more power going to the wheels. The difference in drive was remarkable not to mention fuel economy.

If the new jimny ends up with the A960e at a minimum it will be a big improvement, but it would be great to see an 8 speed with a real low first gear. The AA80e would be great, but cost will play a big part.

That's assuming it's not just recycling the current Jimny underpinnings though.

Suzuki are a pretty conservative manufacturer. They're very risk averse and spend the minimum possible on engineering. (Note they haven't invested in hybrid tech, don't do their own diesels, and are launching a new model on a 20 year old platform.

To equip a jimny with an 8 speed auto would require a very large investment in a transmission that currently doesn't exist. The existing RWD 8 speeds are large and heavy and designed for >400nm. The current 4 speed jimny auto is shared with the kei variant which could never justify such a large and heavy auto.

Short answer- don't hold your breath.
