To equip a jimny with an 8 speed auto would require a very large investment in a transmission that currently doesn't exist. The existing RWD 8 speeds are large and heavy and designed for >400nm. The current 4 speed jimny auto is shared with the kei variant which could never justify such a large and heavy auto.
Short answer- don't hold your breath. All true. The aisin 8 speed is 95kgs. Pretty light for what it is, as it uses a lot of alloy, but yes used behind v8's currently. The 960e is a 6 speed that is a conservative enough choice that is realistic and would be a big improvement. Suzuki have used Aisin gearboxes before, the new vitara runs a transverse 6 speed. The 960e is the same auto found in the FT86 and other Japanese 4 bangers, so not really new tech. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

But I wouldn't anticipate they'd use that for the kei version, and Suzuki don't seem to like unique parts between jimny variants- they let Santana, for example, manage that stuff (diesel jimny for Europe for example)

Fact is they will need it to be competitive in regards to fuel economy, drivability etc Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No, both g and m engines jimnys are available in Japan as the jimny wide, and share their auto with the k6a car.

what auto box is being used on the other cars in the line up currently? Ignis, swift, baleno?
chances are the auto box for the Jimny would be the same. Like Steve said, they are not gonna build everything 100% new, chances are they are going to re-cycle stuff from the old version and current cars.
but who knows at the end

but who knows at the end I seriously hope not as they all have no low range options. Looking the spy pics posted earlier in this thread it will run a ladder chassis and solid front and rear axles. Not a transverse box with no low range. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to run an agricultural chassis and suspension design with no low range. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

is going to have low range for sure.
but excuse my NOOB moment and lack of mechanical knowledge specially when it comes to auto and normal cars(both which I have never own one)
is the auto box build differently?. I know the engine could be used in both situations as I have seen engine swaps in here, plus the already talk that it might be sharing same turbo engine. Is not the same with the auto gearbox? low range is the transfer job, so I assume they could use same auto gearbox than its on those cars that it might share the same engine with.
or due to the nature of the FWD cars the gearboxes are completely different?

The gearboxes are completely different.
Very few companies have patents on auto transmission technology and there are surprisingly few variants. GM and Ford have collaborated on the 10 speed auto used in the Camaro and F150. There's BorgWarner (and therefore Aisin Warner) and ZF.
Developing new autos is very expensive, which is why they tend to be used in lots of vehicles. My guess is the Kei compatible 4 speed runs a while yet. They obviously kept development costs to the bare minimum.
As I said, I'm genuinely surprised suzuki retained the chassis and format of the old Jimny. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.
Steve.

or due to the nature of the FWD cars the gearboxes are completely different? All good mate, this is just a speculation thread anyway that's a bit of fun. FWD or "east west" engines with AWD use a different gearbox, normally transverse mounted. It's much harder to run low range. Judging by the spy pics posted earlier looking at what you can see of the driveline it looks as if the engine is mounted north south with a traditional transfer case. Suzuki usually use aisin for their gearboxes. Hence my speculation on what box they might use. The only one I see suitable is the a960e, despite the fact I would love for it to get an 8 speed, but as gwagonsteve mentioned the only 8 speeds aisin make are behind V8's. Wouldn't be the first time Suzuki have used an aisin auto that normally sits behind a V8 on a small 4x4 (vitara AW4) to get an extra gear, but somehow I doubt it will happen with the new jimny. If history is anything to go by id say motor will have no more than 60kw and 0 nm, with an auto box made of cheese. Id bet with a set of 30's and slight incline top speed will be sub 90.

And it would be no surprise because of the target market, which eat them up, and even continue to sell strongly here despite no marketing allocation. It will unlikely ever be revitalized as anything capable as a Sierra, the market for volume sales doesn't exist and similar markets are already saturated.

I agree with Vet180, until you exceed 30s. Have wheeled my sierra back to back with my brother's jimny. On the same size tires and with gearing they were both pretty similar. If anything the Jimny seemed better.
The sierra kills it since I added a locker. Stock, my sierra wouldnt even drive up car ramps, even my GU goes better. lol.

I think the jimny is extremely capable in the current market. it has no direct competition until you go to a jeep wrangler.
I think the new version is awesome. I was afraid it was going to turn into some embarrassing little crap heap that has no 4x4 capability whatsoever (I'm looking at you new vitara). Suzuki can join an elite company like Mercedes by offering a ladder frame, solid axle car for remaining 4x4 enthusiasts into the future.
Also dont forget the x-lander concept - it was a jimny with an electric motor on the back of the transfer case !!!

What I take from this thread is Those that like jimnys will continue to buy them and have a fat time while driving them and the haters will continue to tell them they are wrong and being grumpy while driving their sole less first world shitbox.

Yeh, dat live axle flex bro. But I can't climb dat cause my front end bind and don't flex! My 32's scrub on lock bro. I couldn't keep up cause my lokerz didn't engage. I broke my axlez again.
We can all beat that drum. It ain't hard.
The new Jimny could suck 1 million times more than the current model - but at least it has a few ingredients that give it half a chance to make up for the legislated "safe" world requirements with ANCAP and euro4brazillion anti pollution that previous generations who grew up driving sierra's and lj's have created.

Jimny haters are just as much fun as Jimny fan-boys, one says they can't go anywhere and the other says they can go everywhere. ;D I haven't done anywhere near the kms in my Sierra as I did in my Jimny, but the handful of trips in my Sierra have clearly shown that the both have terrible road manners, it's just that side angles are not so scary anymore... Regardless, if the new Jimny comes in at the same price point as the current Jimny there's guaranteed to be a market for them. And I hope they keep selling them for a while longer, if we are ever in the market for a new small car as a cheap little run-a-round I'd buy another one for sure. But I know what I'd buy it for and it wouldn't be for the same reasons that I bought my current Sierra...
