Hi Guys,

In the process of fitting the new Corolla Carby to the '85 Drover. Have modified the base plate as per the various videos and sourced some studs for mounting it. The original gasket that was on top of the adapter plate is kaput and the gasket that was under the adapter plate is pretty munted too so going to replace both of them.

I have the choice of using a Rubberised Cork 1.6mm gasket or a Oil Jointing Gasket Sheet - 0.4 (from SCA).

or I can just use a gasket-goo gasket maker - I already have a tube of the high temp red permatex RTV.

Any thoughts on which way to go?

Personally I try and stay away from cork and if using gasket goo make sure its suitable for fuel as a friend made that mistake before (although it lasted almost a year) and have had lots of success with gasket sheets although they can be a bit of a pain to get right sometimes.

Nah dont use goo near fuel, just use a normal sheet gasket or hell even a weetbix packet. No goo means you can re-use the gasket as well

Barbender I will do a full write-up once the job is finished. The carby came from eBay - was about $150 delivered.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Carburetor-f ... 9#payCntId

So far (fingers crossed) the process is pretty simple. At first the whole thing looks like a giant mess until you realise that you just block off almost all the vacuum and water hoses going to the new carby. Process kind of goes like this:

1) Unbolt the old carby and adapter plate and tape off the hole in the manifold to stop crap falling in.
2) Disconnect the fuel line and plug it + the throttle and choke cables
3) Trim back all the vacuum lines that used to go into the carby and plug them (I used some BB's shoved in the end)
4) Cut off and block the water lines that went into it (a bit of 10mm bolt shank and a hose clamp works a treat)
5) Carefully empty out the fuel from the old carby
6) Remove the fuel spigot from the old carby (its a Banjo Bolt arrangement) - needs a bit of force to shift it
7) Bolt the fuel spigot into the new carby after removing the threaded adapater there. This one is locktited in and needs a fair bit of force to move - be careful
8) Fill in the semi circular groove on the adapter plate with some JB Weld or similar and once dry use fine sandpaper to flatten it down
9) Cut with a Dremel a small groove in the adapter plate as per the You Tube videos (although to be honest it seems like you can just ignore this phase)
10) Fabricate a new mount for the throttle cable out of some bent angle iron and bolt to the manifold (not the carby) - I haven't finished this bit
11) New gaskets top and bottom of the adapter plate
12) Look through your parts bin and find 4 long bolts that just happen to fit the carby (woohoo!) and convert them into 35mm long studs. Locktite them into the manifold and mount the carby on them with nuts and washers and evenly clamp down.
13) Run a new bit of vacuum line from the only vacuum attachment you have on the carby to the distributor cap vacuum advance
14) Look for another spare bolt in the bin that happens to fit through the air cleaner into the top of the carby. Whole thing fits perfectly - not sure why some sites say you have to modify the air cleaner housing, on my '85 it has plenty of clearance.
15) Connect the fuel line, throttle cable and choke cable and fire her up!

Did everything up to the bracket fabrication for the throttle cable last night - was about 3 hours all up and most of that was hesitation over removing the old lines but they are all obsolete now. I used a new bit of hose for the vacuum advance line so I knew that I didn't have to save any of the old lines.

Fixing the old adpater plate is trivial if you have a Dremel tool, a bit of JB Weld and some wet and dry sandpaper. The replacement "studs" are needed as the bolts can't get clearance on the new carby. The Yanks go on about the studs being really hard to find as they are metric super fine threads but pretty sure SCA carries something similar. I just happened to have a heap of bolts in that thread sitting there already.

Thanks Bammo, looking forward to the write up when it's done, thanks for the ebay link and all the info so far.

MrRocky, the 4g33 carb, what year Galant and how does it differ from the Corolla carby.

I wound up just using the 0.8mm gasket sheet from Supercheap and it worked a treat.

Fabricated a quick throttle bracket last night out of some scrap metal and installed the carby. Connected the fuel line and cranked the engine for maybe 15 seconds and she started no problems. So much easier to start now and surprisingly so much quieter than before. Haven't test driven it yet but so far didn't even need to touch the idle or mixture adjustments.

I can't believe how easy this conversion was - will do a write up shortly in a new thread.
