Hi all,
Is there a reference regarding the interchangeable running gear for Sierras, i.e. between models what diffs will fit what models and gear ratios, transfer cases, gearboxes, hubs, tail shafts, brake drums etc. This may have been covered before but I can't find a reference to it. The reason for my question is I have access to a couple of earlier Sierras and a Maruti LWB and I want to know what I can use from them, my Sierra is an SJ70. Regards.

Pretty much any of the running gear will be interchangeable between to 1.3ltr models, 1ltr models much of it is interchangeable too. There are differences in gearing however and some subtle differences here and there.
Diffs, sure change them over. Make sure however that you change both diffs over. Don’t use an SJ50 diff in the rear and an SJ70 diff in the front for example. Use either one or the other.
5 speed gearboxes have a slightly different 5th gear, SJ50 5th is slightly taller .
Drive shaft flanges are slightly different bolt spacing. So if your using a 1ltr transfer case and SJ70 drive shafts you’ll need to use you the flanges off your SJ70. Not sure if the bolt spacing is the same between 1ltr and SJ50 1.3. But SJ50 is a smaller spacing than SJ70.
SJ50 G13A and SJ70 G13BA are interchangeable with little external differences.
Carby are the same but the wires which run to the choke are different.
Does that about sum it up?
Edit: WT and NT axles are different length and spring perch spacing is different.

To add to what Bumstein said: 1.0 leafy case - 1.58:1 high range, 2.511:1 low range 1.3 leafy case - 1.409:1 high range, 2.268:1 low range 1.3 coily case - 1.320:1 high range, 2.123 low range 1.0 leafy diffs - ?? 1.3 leafy diffs - 3.727:1 1.3 coily diffs - 3.91:1 SJ40 - ???cc - not much HP SJ40 - no overdrive - 4spd = 1:1?? SJ50 - 1324cc motor - ~63HP SJ50 - 0.795:1 fifth gear overdrive SJ70/SJ80 - 1298cc motor - ~66HP SJ70/SJ80 - 0.864:1 fifth gear overdrive That's all the info I have on hand, if anyone wants to chime in feel free to correct me anywhere I'm wrong Also, be aware that sierras built around 87/88/89 are considered crossover year stuff. It was the crossover between SJ50 and SJ70 and it seems Suzuki simply chucked whatever spare parts they had lying around into these cars and sometimes things aren't as you expect. Can't comment on marutis unfortunately. I'm not familiar with them at all, other than that some were NT, some were WT and those that were retained the 1.0 and 4spd. Not sure on diffs, axles, ratios etc at all.

All due respect to everyone who's posted in this thread, but there's a few assumptions going on here and nowhere near enough information from you about what you want to achieve. I know asking a general question might have seemed appropriate, but there's so many variables it's pretty hard to answer. It's also unclear what you're capable of/willing to do.
If you're trying to build a 1.3/WT Maruti, how easy that is will depend very much on what Maruti you have. There are NT and WT Maruti's. Converting a NT maruti to WT/1.3 is a lot of work - on top of the engine/gearbox conversion, you also need to narrow track the WT axle spring spacing to fit the WT axles, and then you'll have WT axle gears which, as has been pointed out, are 3.7, not the 4.1 the maruti came with. NT maruti's have 1.0 sized, narrow track axles which are pretty much junk.
However, if you have a WT Maruti you already have WT/4.1 geared 1.3 sized axles, so it's just the engine mounts and some small adjustments to the gearbox crossmember/jackshaft to convert to 5 speed. (the maruti 4 speed isn't the same as the early sierra 1.0 4 speed - it's basically a 1.3 5 speed with no 5th gear, and you can convert it to 5 speed with the tailhsaft housing and shafts from a 1.3, not that there's any reason to.
What the "couple of earlier" sierras are is also important - if they're 1.0 cars, springs, steering box, transfer (sort of) and body parts are really all that's interchangeable with a 1.3. If they're 1.3 NT cars, then the mechanicals and third members are helpful, the axles and axle housings aren't.
Spindles/hubs/knuckles/FWH/front brakes are all the same across all disc braked cars.
So, to avoid a lot of non-specific and maybe unhelpful responses, what *exactly* do you have and what do you want to build? Then we can tell you what you can use.

In reply to Steve, I am not trying to build anything at all, but I have been given the opportunity to take as many parts as I want from a Maruti and 2 x 4sp 1.0 lt sierras before the go to the crusher, my question really is what is compatible between the vehicles, obviously my SJ70 is a wide track so the NT's wont fit, transfer cases etc may fit. It's more about building up a spares base than anything else, after all, free parts if they can be used, it's a no brainer.

I agree. Give the guy $50 a car - about all they are worth as scrap, which is sitting at about $80/ton & flog them on fleabay - to someone who might do something decent with them. Once cars like this are scrapped, the parts are gone, never to be available again. 1.0litre stuff is the least desirable, but you will easily get your money back x 5 (unless they are really rusty pieces of junk to start with) A LWB anything is worth saving - we (Seriously Suzi) would pay $500 minimum for a complete car, almost no matter how bad it was, but distance in this care, makes it not worthwhile. I have allocated the next 2 weekend to stripping the three vehicle already mentioned, Maruti body can be salvaged with some rust repairs others (1LT) are stuffed, but, just in case any one has not looked at I Want It, I need front and/or rear seats for an SJ70, (Vic Only) regards again to all that have been helpful. Regards barbender.!!!!!!

If you have the room, get it all. You can always dispose of the remnants later, either to the scarp guy or someone on here.. Too much stuff has gone to the crusher already and there is no coming back from there...
