Just had my clutch changed (by Suzistore) and the gearbox oil changed as a result. Thrust bearings etc are all new as part of the replacement clutch kit. The Suzistore mechanic put in Valvoline Duragear gearbox oil (I dont know what grade) to supposedly help with cold gear shifts. I wanted a Fully Synthetic gear oil in there so I dumped it out and put in Penrite SIN Manual Trans API GL-4 75W-85. I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but after a long highway run I now get a squeely bearing/pulley type sound. It is only present with the clutch pedal out (ie engine engaged) and goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed. I assume it is only there when the oil is hot. Could it be due to the fact the oil is too thin? Suzuki recommend SAE 75W-90 GL-4. Or have I possibly got other problems here?

And while I'm at it, what's the story with GL-4/GL-5 etc? Penrites website recommends a GL-5 grade gearbox oil. Can GL-4 and 5 be interchanged? I dont quite understand this rating.

My opinion of sin g/box oil is very low, dump it out & put a straight 85w in, non sin. It sound`s like the input shaft bearing is having a bit of a cry about the choice of oil..... As for the GL, never hear of it( probably have just can`t remember)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm curious, on what grounds do you base your opinion of Penrite SIN oil? I remember picking up a similar opinion from you in another post. Normally people base opinions on bad experiences etc. Can you elaborate on why you feel this way towards this product? I'm only curious and not arguing the point with you. I was under the impression penrite was a reputable brand, but if not, I want to know why I should spend my $ elsewhere...

Didn`t say Penrite oil`s, well I said sin, which is a penrite.
I don`t like synthetic gear oil`s unless the box is brand new ( being rebuilt or new) Don`t know why, but whenever I`ve changed to synthetic`s from a min based oil the box would blow up, I`ve used Penrite for years and had no problem`s with it (apart from to thin in an old eng, my fault)

As I said, don`t know why, it should be better for it, just never worked for me.

I use a straight 80w ( said 85w before ) in all Suzuki gear box`s at work & have never had a prob, if I put a 80/90w thay don`t like to change gear`s, especially cold..

The only other thing your noise could be is the throw out bearing, But I doubt it..

Can I ask what brand you would recommend for the gearbox oil? I cant say I've ever seen a straight 80W oil as you suggest, but then again, I'm not an oil guru and through habit I walk into an auto store and grab the "usual" off the shelf. So much goes into marketing by these companies its hard to tell whats good and whats crap.

the GL 4 or 5 is an API standard referenced to the shear protection that the oil provides.
A GL 4 is perfect for gearboxes/ t'cases, but diffs that have high shear loads due to the hypoid cut gears need a GL5 oil.

The higher the number the better the protection, but the syncros in the gearboxes need a bit friction to get them to spin up to speed properly so sometimes the GL5 oil will make it hard to change gears..

The 80w90 that steknig is talking about is a GL5 oil, and I agree with him as my gearboxes have felt awful after filling them with 80w90. I now use castrol VMX-M which is a 75w85 GL4 oil... and I can change gears again. :)

We have this stuff at work for a particular type of forklift that can't take anything else but 80W in it's diff(s). Valvoline produce it, but I'm pretty sure Castrol probably do too.

OK, back to the drawing board. The car started making the noise whilst stationary today so I quickly jumped under the car and I found the noise relates to the clutch release fork. With the gearbox in neutral, vehicle stationary the noise is present. Applying pressure to the release fork in any direction stops the noise. If you wobble the fork around a little you can hear the noise again but stationary pressure on the fork makes the sound go away. Any further ideas? Remember, new clutch kit incl fork recently installed, and my vehicles clutch is hydrolic.

I farkin hate diagnosing these annoying rattles and squeeks. You think its one thing and its always something completely different. Or its a case of hunting for a needle in a hay stack.

Throw out bearing eh? Its a bloody brand new one! Faaaaaaarks sake. Its as if the fork is rubbing on it or something. I was looking at a pic of the breakdown, theres stuff all else in there! I suppose its a box out again job. Cant afford that so annoying rattle it is. Nothing worse than spending a shit load getting your clutch done, only to get it making new noises when you get it back. *sigh*

if it shuts up when you put pressure on it jsut leave it a few weeks, itll sort itself out

I dunno why they do it but heaps of new clutches do it, both the clutches I have put in mine this year did it and its fine now

As Royce suggested, drive it for a few weeks and see if it goes away. Did you install it yourself or did you have a workshop do it? I can't see it being the throw out bearing. Did you change the little spigot bearing in the flywheel?

Actually id be on the thought of throw out bearing as well. He says it makes the noise when stationary and in neutral, but when slight pressure is applied it is gone. Throwout bearing spinning on the clutch fingers? Also some people I've seen grease the contact face of the throwout bearing to clutch fingers 8O . This causes the inner race of the throwout to spin on the fingers and eventually where a big groove in them.

Id take it back to the place and see what they can do about it.
