my datsun has a ballast resistor also, but it also has a hot-start feature where the resistor is bypassed when the key is turned. A separate wire comes from the ignition for this purpose and runs 12 v straight into the coil
i coudnlt work out from the manual whether this is the case here or whether its always wired into the resistor
there are only 3 wires coming from the ignition switch, but there's a black line around the coil area ( see pick) that i can't work out
does anyone know

That will be the noise suppressor.
Yes it will have the hot wire to supply the coil with 12v on cranking. This may be a black/green wire from the solenoid, but could also be black/yellow.

only one spade connector on the solenoid, its a generic replacement
could be spliced in the wiring. i'll check that wire for 12 v when cranking

Sorry I was thinking of the SJ410. The LJ80 manual shows supply going through the resistor at all times with no hot wire. The other unit still sounds like a radio noise suppressor.
