Hi Everyone,
Complete Noob here. Got a APR 1996 SJ80 Sierra and its running 235/75/15s on it. Took it for a roadworthy today so I could transfer the rego to myself and it got pinged.
I spoke to the guy I bought it off who is a vehicle inspector / mechanic and he said that it was legal, was within the 2 inch rule and that this SJ80 is a wide body.
Question -> HOW do I prove this to the inspector that failed my SJ80? Is there something I can do other than buy new tires?
Cheers

Unfortunately your inspector is right. Stock tyre is 205 70r15 Your current 235 75r15 tyres are more then 2 inches bigger. There’s just over half an inch in it, but they’re still too big.

NT & WT ran the same size stock tyres, so tyre size makes no difference whether it's either. What did the inspector specifically write down? If he measured the track width and it was over spec, then you simply need to measure your rim width & backspacing versus stock to show you haven't exceeded the max track width increase where you are. Or, maybe just go to another inspector if this one is clueless.
re: Pete79's reply - you may still get away with the 235 if you refer to the manufacturer's size specification, as most run undersized =)

If the wheels/tyres are not legal good chance they won't pay up,Inspector guy is doing you a favour.

Bit worried I’m going to be spending a lot to get this zuk roadworthy here in ACT.
Managed to find a guy who will sell me a set of 215/70 and fit them but he’s planted the seed that the rims might not work.
I did see that the spare has a 220/80 on it and the main wheels are 235/75 so any guess if a 215/70 is going to fit?

I’ve never seen a 215 70, when people say 215, it’s a 215 75 15. I’ve definitely never heard of a 220 80
What size are your rims? A 215 will go on a stock 5.5” rim or a 6” rim but is too stretched on a 7” rim.

Thanks Gwagensteve. I’ve managed to get a set of stock rims and going to try get these 215/75s on them. Hoping that it’s enough to sort out the RWC defect.

You’ll be fine on stock SJ80/vitara rims and 215’s.

I'd just borrow some original wheels and tyres, or something similar, and replace them back once everything is finished. There's a chance there'll be less stuffing about.

And just to clarify, Narrow or wide track doesn't make any difference to larger legal tyre size - it's 215/75 for all 15" rim models.
The only difference is for commercial models with 16" rims, they rand a 6:00 X 16 tyre. All Suzuki built 1.0 and 1.3 tray backs and some 1.0 SWB's were commercial models. The SWB's had no back seats, tachos, lowback seats and typically drum front brakes. holden drovers are a bit of a mix and match. Sadly, they're not dual placarded 15/16" so it's either or.
