G'day everyone,

I just picked up a 1983 SJ40V and had a few questions. Body is in fantastic condition and I play on giving it a respray. I understand it is the 1.0L engine and I was just after some thoughts on whether to keep it stock or do an engine conversion? I was thinking maybe a F6A Turbo. Or just keep her original? The 1.0l seems a little lacking in power and I have heard the gearbox isn't fantastic off road.

Cheers,

Sam

If you can find and F6A in good condition it’s a great conversion.

Where could you get a F6A from though? Maybe in a wrecked suzuki carry or Cappuccino? Would be hard to get imported too

The cappuccino engine is peak F6A being DOHC, and RWD trim, but the gearbox is unsuitable as it has a remote shifter like a Jimny gearbox that puts the shifter over the top of the transfer case. I suspect a Carry would have a similar problem in reverse. (i'e the shift housing is cable or whacky linkages to get it forward)

There are quite a few F5A and F6A sierras in the country though. I suspect motors (and more importantly, gearboxes) do turn up.

I don't know the status of importing 1/2 cuts any more, but that's the obvious way to get everything required - A K6A Coil sprung front cut would be ideal. It would also supply electric power steer and A/C.

There used to be a market for Alto Works F6A front cuts which are basically the cappuccino engine in FWD trim - The mighty boy bois used to be all over them. I haven't looked for many years.
